What is Psoriasis ?
Psoriasis is associated with serious health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease
and depression. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes raised, scaly, red patches
on the skin. • Elbows, knees or scalp are mostly affected
by it but it can appear on any location. Patient may feel itching, bites or burning.
But Before going ahead One important question ?
• Is Psoriasis contagious ? What do you think ?
• NO there is a big no for that question. • You can touch the person without fear
of being infected. So please shake hand and hug the people affected by psoriasis.
So if it is not contagious then How does a person get psoriasis? What causes psoriasis
? The exact reason that causes Psoriasis, is
not known till now but immune system and genetics play a major role for it.
As our nails and hair increases so like our skin but in case of Psoriasis there is a very
fast growth of skin and results in raised, scaly, red patches on the skin.
How critical is psoriasis? it may be mild , moderate and critical.
MILD If psoriasis covers less than 3 percent of
the body, it is mild. MODERATE
If psoriasis covers between 3 to 10 percent of the body, it is moderate.
CRITICAL If psoriasis covers more than 10 percent of
the body, it is severe. Hi doc . What are the Types of psoriasis ?
Well there are five types of psoriasis. 1. Ery-thro-dermic psoriasis
When there is extensive and fiery redness over most of the body, it is Ery-thro-dermic
psoriasis. The patient feels itching and pain and itching may be so severe that the blood
may come out from skin. It is rare, occurring in 3 percent of people who have psoriasis
during their life time. 2.Pustular psoriasis
Pustular psoriasis can be found out by white blisters of noninfectious pus bounded by red
skin. This pus is non-contagious and mostly occur in feet or hands.
3. Guttate psoriasis If there are small dotlike red skin, it is
called Guttate psoriasiss. 4. Inverse psoriasis
Inverse psoriasis may be found behind the arm, groin and knee.
5. Plaque psoriasis You may find plaque psoriasis as raised, red
patches with silvery dead skin. The most common area for Plaque psoriasis are elbows, lower
back, knees and scalp. Is psoriasis curable ?
What is the treatment ? There is no cure for psoriasis. It can only
be controlled. How to prevent psoriasis ?
we can control psoriasis by various treatments. I will talk about major treatments and preventions.
1. Light therapy Ultraviolet rays are put on the affected part
of body. Patient has to go for frequent sessions as per doctors recommendation. The amount
and time of ultraviolet rays are set by Doctor, never do this treatment in absence of doctor. 2. No stress
It is found that stress can worsen the psoriasis. So try to keep away from stress and do some
exercises, meditate yourself and do some yoga also. 3. Proper Diet
Some dietary supplements as Oregon grape, vitamin D sources, fish oil, milk thistle
and evening primrose oil can help to control psoriasis. 4. Perfumes and soaps
Avoid soaps, fragrances, scents and Perfumes that may irritate your skin. You have to find
which one irritates your skin. There are products for sensitive skin also, you may try that
ones. 5. Bath with warm water
Warm water with mineral oil or Epsom salt or even olive oil can reduce your itching.
Please apply moisturizer after every bath for better result.
6. Avoid alcohol It has been found that alcohol may worsen
psoriasis. Please avoid alcohol. 7. Say no to dry skin
Prevent your skin from being dry. You may use a humidifier for proper humidity at your
place. As I told earlier you may apply moisturizer after every bath.
8. Avoid Smoking Just Avoid smoking, smoking may produce troubles
