Weekend Housecall: Eczema

Weekend Housecall: Eczema

DAMON: WITH ALL THIS COLD WEATHER I’VE HAD A LOT OF PATIENTS COMING IN WITH ITCHY, DRY SKIN. MANY TIME IS JUST A FLAREUP OF DERMATITIS. THIS IS A CHRONIC SKIN DISORDER THAT INVOLVES SCALY AND ITCHY RASHES. AT LEAST TO LONG-TERM SWELLING AND REDNESS OF THE SKIN. IT IS VERY COMMON IN INFANTS AND MAY START AS EARLY AS TWO TO SIX MONTHS AND PERSISTENT THE CHILDHOOD. THERE IS OFTEN A FAMILY HISTORY OF CONDITIONS LIKE ASTHMA. THINGS THAT MAKE ECZEMA FLAREUP OR ALLERGIES, COLD AIR IN THE WINTERTIME, CONTACT WITH IRRITANTS, CONTACT WITH ROUGH MATERIALS, EXPOSURE TO TOO MUCH WATE FRAGRANCES OR DYES ADDED TO SKIN LOTIONS OR SOAPS. DRY SKIN ALL OVER THE BODY, OR AREAS OF BUMPY SKIN ON THE BACK OF THE ARMS AND BEHIND THE KNEES. AND RAW AREAS FROM SCRATCHING. SKIN COLORING CHANGES AND THICKENING AREAS ARE COMMON. IN CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN AGE TWO, LAY-INS WE CAN OF THE FACE, SCALP, HANDS AND FEET. OLDER CHILDREN AND ADULTS, IS MORE COMMONLY SEEN ON THE INSIDE OF IT KNEES AND ELBOWS AS WELL AS THE NECK, HANDS AND FEET. AVOID SCRATCHING THE RASH OR SKIN AND RELIEVE THE IT’S LIKE USING A MOISTURIZER, A TOPICAL STEROID CREAM, FOR THE PRESCRIBED CREAM. AND TAKE ANTIHISTAMINES TO REDUCE SEVERE ITCHING. KEEP YOUR SKIN LUBRICATED. THESE OINTMENTS, CREAMS AND LOTIONS TO OUR THREE TIMES A DAY. MOISTURIZERS AND SOAPS MUST ALWAYS BE FREE OF ALCOHOL. EVEN THE SWEET SMELLING STUFF YOU PUT ON BABIES IS A NO-NO. CHEMICALS AND STRESS MAY CAUSE SWEATING AND ALSO WORSEN THE CONDITION. WHEN BATHING, KEEP WATER CONTACT AS BRIEF AS POSSIBLE. SURE, COOL BATHS ARE BETTER THAN LONG, HOT BATHS. DO NOT SCRUB OR DRY THE SKIN TOO LONG. APPLY LUBRICATING CREAMS, LOTIONS OR LIMITS ON THE SCREEN. THIS WILL HELP DROP THE MOISTURE IN THE SKIN. THIS CONDITION CAN BE MANAGED, BUT YOU MUST BE DILIGENT SO YOU WILL NOT END UP IN MY OFFICE
