Thankfully, we have a lot of great treatments for it. Firstly we want to talk about the triggers that make rosacea worse, and we want to minimize those triggers. That’s always critical. We know that stress is a major trigger. We know alcohol, especially wine, is a trigger for flaring up rosacea. We know that anything that really heats up your body, so very hot drinks, spicy foods, really hot showers, or over-exercising can really aggravate rosacea. Of course the sun is a big factor in aggravating rosacea, so wearing a great quality sunscreen and regularly reapplying the sunscreen is really important for managing rosacea. Those are the general measures, and they’re an important part of managing your rosacea. There are also prescription creams that we can use for rosacea. They’re particularly effective for the papulo-pustular, or the pimple form of rosacea that’s like acne. Those often contain things like Metronidazole, or Azelaic acid. For people with more aggressive rosacea, where they have a lot of for example, pimples, we often use pills, typically antibiotic pills, occasionally low dose isotretinoin as well for rosacea. For patients with the flushing and the redness and the burst blood vessels, we find that lasers and light devices can actually be very effective in reducing that redness and flushing. That’s typically, once a month treatments for a series of 4 to 6 treatments and most patients would repeat that maybe once a year to maintain the effect, as well as minimizing the triggers I’ve discussed. Thankfully, there are more and more things on the horizon. We’ve been involved in a number of research studies, and even over the next year or two, we’re going to have a couple of new products for rosacea. So stay tuned; things are very exciting with rosacea. The treatments are getting better, and our understanding of rosacea has greatly improved in the last few years.
