#TomorrowsDiscoveries: Protecting Against UV Radiation – Anna Chien, M.D.

>>It’s widely known that ultraviolet rays can damage the skin causing skin cancers and worsening light-sensitive diseases. There are many products from sunscreens to sun-protective clothing
that can protect us from UV radiation. However, these products do no protect us against the visible light that all of us are exposed to on a daily basis even indoors. Little is known regarding
its effects on the skin nor ways of protecting against it. Hi, my name’s Anna Chien, dermatologist at Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine. My team and I have
found that visible light can cause skin inflammation and even skin discoloration. There’s even concern that it could potentially
cause skin cancers and other skin diseases. We hope to find ways to protect patients from the negative effects of visible light and improve their skin health. (upbeat music)
