Shaving My Head – Sex Appeal, Travel, Feminism, Regrets?

Shaving My Head – Sex Appeal, Travel, Feminism, Regrets?

Hi guys. Rue here. Um, today I’m going to
talk a bit about um why I shaved my head. Um. If the camera is a little wobbly I apologize
I’m just holding it. Um. Myself so. Still kinda new to this I’m gonna really make an
effort not to look at the screen recording me and not to wiggle it around too much. Just
kinda like chilling in bed right now. Got this little… little shirt on. So um, I want
to talk today about why I decided to shave my head. Um, this is the result. I recently
tinted it black. I actually have footage of that I kinda just updated it, shaved it a
little shorter on the sides a little longer on the top as you can see. And um, I … when
I decided to shave my head I actually had a lot of questions from my friends. You know
on Facebook and stuff saying like you know, why did you decide to do it? Um… any regrets?
You know… what do you think of it? Um, I had actually a friend who decided to go ahead
and shave her’s after um, after seeing me do it. And, um I know personally when I decided
to shave my head I actually went onto Youtube and I was like watching videos and I’d been
hemming and hawing over it for like a year and I had bleached my hair and cut my hair
and done that little half-fade thing. But I hadn’t actually shaved half of it I just
kind of cut half of it you know, extremely short. It was turning into a very weird like
half bob and I was like what have I done? And…uuum I had been bleaching and dyeing
my hair for so long I honestly just kind of wondered like what does, what does my hair
naturally look like? Um. And so … um, I’m in a long-term relationship with my boyfriend
and I was asking him like … oh my god! Are you still going to be attracted to me? Like
is it going to be okay? What if I hate it? What if I look like, you know, a moldy butterball
turkey that’s got like fuzz growing on top of it? I think that was something I actually
asked him and I was just like trepidatious and I watched these YouTube videos about it
and he was like, you know, why… why are you… why do you need a YouTube video to
tell you it’s okay? And I … just um, I guess I finally like looked at…. something clicked
in my head and I kind of took the trepidation as a challenge. You know, like, if I’m nervous
about this then I’m just going to do it! You know, it’s just hair. It grows back. Um. And…
I didn’t, I didn’t, you know intend for it to be like a feminist thing or you know a
rebellious thing. I just wanted to see if I could rock the look. I thought a lot of
women pulled it off really nicely. I, like I aid, I wanted to find out what my natural
hair looked like underneath there and … so… I… decided to do it and… um, I think you
know how I felt directly afterward. I was so scared I was going to have this moment,
you know, where I just looked at my head and was like what have I done?! You know? *laughter*
and you know burst into tears and saw this little bald person and um, I will say that
isn’t what happened I actually felt this huge sense of just like… empowerment? And excitement.
And release. And just like oh my gosh. Like, I just kept touching my head. I had like for
the longest time I would be constantly touching my head, touching my head. And I wanted other
people to touch my head. Like, “Oh touch my head.” As though that makes it more real if
like, you know, you actually can like feel, feel it. Now I’m wanting to do it again. But,
um… yeah! And, I will say if you’re considering it… traveling with your head shaved? I love
to travel. My boyfriend and I love to travel and um, traveling with your head shaved is
ah-mazing! You don’t need to bring a hair straightener. You don’t need to worry about
a curler. You don’t need to bring a blow dryer. You don’t have to bring a hairbrush! You don’t
have to bring your shampoo. Any shampoo will do. I mean, unless, you know, I’m the kind
of person – I don’t shampoo my hair every day so you know cheap hotel shampoo is fine.
Whereas before I used to bust out the dry shampoo, the hairspray, the, you know, curling
iron, straightener depending on where I was going. Or I’d like curl my hair before and
try to spray that and get it to stay. And like, traveling with your hair like this is
so convenient. It’s so amazing. It’s so nice. That is one of the biggest perks about it
is that when I travel I, you know, bring my make up with me and I’m not worried about
my hair. It’s awesome. If you are the kind of person that when you wake up in the morning
and you don’t want to do your hair. It doesn’t get easier than this hairstyle. All I do in
the morning is sometimes I shampoo it, sometimes I don’t. Um, you know, I rinse it and then,
um, I put – you know – I dry it with a towel and um, I put some hair gel. I would say some
of the downsides are that as it grows out it can definitely start to get kind of awkward.
Um, I would say another negative is that I kind of like to wear really girly dresses
sometimes like poofy dresses or I definitely think sometimes the aesthetic and the shape
just isn’t there for some of the outfits that I want to wear. Um… so that I think I’ll
be growing my hair back out soon and I always say those are the hardest things is the awkward
stage that you go into when you start trying to grow it out. I think when you want to keep
some kind of shape and then secondly when you want to wear like more of a girly, nice
poofy dress sometimes it’s like … I don’t know… like you know, your opinion may vary
and … it depends on the dress and it depends on the outfit but sometimes, like, I feel
odd about like wearing a poofy dress and then having like short hair. I feel like with my
hair really short I go for more sleeker, tight fitting clothes or crop tops. Sometimes I’m
like… mmm… I really could go for a different look and um, you know… you’re stuck with
this. I mean, the only other good thing is though is that you can wear wigs very easily.
If you have a collection of wigs, I mean, this is super easy, you know to just throw
on a wig. And there you go. So… um… it has it’s you know, it has it’s positives,
it has its negatives um, I will say that too that certain people will comment. I know the
other day one of my friends uh, a male friend of mine made the comment – I decided to wear
a headscarf – um, and give that a try to keep my head warm. I live in the Midwest. And,
this past week has been extremely cold. I decided to try to wear a headscarf and he
was like, “Oh, you like you have cancer or you’re about to read tarot cards.” And we
have that kind rapport between each other but you know some people might have those
kinds of concepts… say those things. And I think you have to really have like a level
of confidence which I find is silly you know, given that it’s 2016 but um some people still
will definitely make judgments about women regarding this hairstyle. They don’t think
it’s effeminate. They don’t think it’s attractive on women and I think that, um… I think that
you have to have a lot of confidence about it. Um, and just basically fuck you I’m gonna
do what I wanna do and I also feel like other women that I’ve met that have shaved their
head were like ooooh like when you see another woman who has shaved her head you’re like
oooh you know? You shaved you’re head too. I like you’re hair. Today at the co-op there
was girl there that had shaved her hair and we were talking about it and how it is to
grow it out so… um, BONUS you get to join a really cool sorority of other women that
have had you know, the gumption to shave their head. So, um, I really don’t feel like it
should be taboo at this day and age but to some people it definitely, it’s definitely
a big step. Um, and I would say overall if you’re thinking about doing it – just do it!
Just, just do it. It’s like don’t worry about what other people think. Um – it’s HAIR it
will grow back. And, um. You can have healthy, you know, undyed hair. You can kinda start
over if you’ve been um you know, doing what I’ve done for so many years – dyeing, bleaching,
etc. And it kind of gives it a nice rest and gives you a new starting point. Hopefully
this video has helped you kind of take into consideration the positives and negatives.
I’m going to show you guys um, a bit about uh, a bit of me actually shaving my head um,
kind of doing some upkeep on it and um putting a little bit of temporary dye. I prefer the
temporary dye like Manic Panic and Punky Colours … brands like that because they’re actually
a conditioner. They’re very, um, gentle on your hair um, depending on how long you keep
it in. I mean, I only kept mine in, I mean you can still see my little white spot. It
looks like a bald spot but it’s not it’s just a little white spot. Little white patch there
as well. It’s more of like a tint. It’s not really an abrasive dye. And the other benefit
to that is that it will eventually kind of wash out and then you can just kind of touch
it up again. You have more flexibility. Whereas, like an actual black dye is going to be extremely
harsh it’s going to be red based and it’s going to um, you know take a lot longer to
wash out. If you keep shaving it you don’t really have to worry I guess because you’re
just going to eventually shave it out but I actually intend to potentially bleach mine
again sometime when it gets a little bit longer. And um, it’s a lot easier to bleach out a
blue or a violet than it is something with a red base. So, um, those are some things
to keep in mind. If you have any questions please leave them below. I would be happy
to answer them. Um… let me know if you guys would like to see anymore about this. One
thing too I kind of wanted to mention is you know, even recently and I’m going to not stay
on my soapbox very long. But even recently, there was a teenage girl who um was caught
sending some promiscuous … I don’t know if promiscuous is the right word… some suggestive
pictures to a boy her age. And her father had threatened to cut off her hair. After
he found these pictures he did cut off her hair. He took pictures of it, shamed her,
it went around the school and this young girl actually ended up killing herself. And, um,
I just think it’s like shameful that we live in a day and age where despite all the modern
advances in technology and you know, free speech and attempts at you know, feminism
and equality that aren’t quite where they need to be at I think it’s just really a shame
that stuff like cutting off a woman’s hair can um, be used to shame someone or make them
feel less feminine. And, what I would say to you is you know, your hair absolutely does
not determine your femininity. Did I say that word correctly? Um… it … absolutely does
not. You are not measured by the length of your hair and um, you can still 100% go with
this look and still you know, feminine. And um, so just don’t let that stop you. Just
kind of keep in mind where we are today as women and if you really are considering it
and you want to do it don’t worry about other people. Do it for yourself. Give it a try.
It’s a wonderful feeling, um at least I feel that it is so. If you have questions like
I said go ahead and leave them in the comments below. I will read them. I will um answer
any questions that you have and go ahead and like and subscribe if you’d like to see more
out of me. I will be trying to post videos every week um potentially even twice a week!
So, thanks guys! This has been Rue. Um, have a great night!
