I’m Dr. Crane and I’m here to talk about skin
cancer and skin cancer treatment options. We’ve been treating skin cancers for many
years and in the past its typically involved surgery or cutting but now we have an excellent
modality as another option and this is called Superficial Xray therapy, or SRT. This particular
machine behind me, the SRT 100, we are actually the first in the Wilmington area to have this
machine, one of the first in the state of North Carolina, and theres only about a hundred
world wide so we are really fortunate to have this treatment available to us. It’s totally
painless; theres no stitching, no needles, no numbing of areas and it takes less than
a minute to do the treatment. We line up the cone, we deliver this radiation to the cancer.
the radiation, when its absorbed by the cancer, actually stops the skin cancer from reproducing
and actually ends up killing it off. So its a great treatment option. It’s used for basal
cell and squamous cell skin cancers. Typically we’ll treat three times a week for about one
month, or twelve treatments all together. No cutting, no stitches, no anesthetic, no
pain. If you have any questions at all about Superficial Radiation Therapy for skin cancers
then either ask your dermatologist or feel free to give us a call.
