available over the counter in many forms such as pills and teas promoters have the popular herbal remedy
have boasted its ability to boost the immune system as well as treat and prevent the common
cold. Is there truth to these health claims? Does echinacea to prevent colds? Is this myth or medicine? Echinacea prevents
colds. That is probably a myth and I will
explain that– I’m Louis Papa, I’m a physician with the
University Rochester Medical Center I’m professor of clinical medicine. Echinacea is a plant based compound that’s always had some folklore associated with it that it prevents colds and its entered into our medical
mainstream as an alternative medicine herbal medicine to try to prevent colds.
The exact mechanism’s not entirely clear but has been looked at because so many
people take it and has been several retrospective and prospective studies
not so good studies in pretty good studies that have looked at this and in general
there’s no effect it doesn’t seem to prevent cold except there are certain forms of Echinacea in certain doses that are relatively high that may prevent some colds and some
people. To put that in a more qualified sense
you have to treat several hundred people to prevent one cold. So the effect would have to one
individual probably pretty small and when you couple that with the fact
that you’re not exactly sure what form of echinacea will do that and how much you have to take for all
practical purposes it doesn’t work and that’s medicine not sure if it’s myth or medicine connect
with us online we’ll get to work and get you a second opinion Bluecross Blueshield is a proud sponsor of Second Opinion. Live Fearless.
