Preventing Anxiety and Depression when Living with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis


(thoughtful music) – Living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis is difficult. It can be stressful and unfortunately lead to anxiety and depression. In one study, patients with psoriasis were about 1.4 times more
likely to have depression and 1.3 times more likely to have anxiety. In another study, patients
with psoriatic arthritis were even more likely to
have anxiety and depression than those with psoriasis alone. This is a large number of patients and there are fortunately ways to help. We also know that acute
psychological stress has been associated with elevated levels of inflammation in the bloodstream. Which in turn may lead
to worsening psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. We want to know how you are
coping with your disease and it is important to keep us informed. There are both medications,
stress management programs, mindfulness programs, and therapy that we can recommend to help. A multidisciplinary approach is key if you are someone who may
have anxiety or depression. Working closely with your rheumatologist, with your primary care
doctor, or your family doctor, and with a mental health provider, these are all key to improvement. Keep us all in the loop. Having a team of providers that
can treat the whole person, both the mind and the body, is
key to improving your health. There are several
