Parents — putting on the sunscreen may be
working. Melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, appears to be decreasing in kids.
I’m Rachelle Grossman with your latest health news. Despite past research indicating that
melanoma in both children and adults was becoming more common, the rates of melanoma in children
and adolescents appears to have dropped. The authors of a new study used data from US cancer
registries and say the decreased rate of melanoma in older teens might be attributed to health
campaigns advocating sunscreens, more time spent indoors, or increased parental awareness.
However, researcher also noted that the number of new melanoma cases in adults did not decrease
over the same time period.
