Meet Rheumatologist Vaidehi Chowdhary, MBBS, MD, DM

– So usually we treat people with musculoskeletal
problems, joint pains, or autoimmune conditions. Most of them are conditions like lupus, vasculitis, and different
types of arthritis. What’s unique about
rheumatology is it still depends a lot on what the patients are telling us. So part of the problem is a
lot of our patients look well, but they’re suffering a lot. They are in pain. They have fatigue. And we know that it’s
part of their disease, and I think rheumatologists
are unique in that regard, that they’ll often listen, knowing that this is part of the disease. So patients often feel heard, and I think that’s the first step. When you see patients for the first time, they’re in pain. There’s a lot of inflammation, a lot of joints that are painful, and many are discouraged. People are worried that
they’ll be disabled, they’ll lose their jobs. And thankfully now there
are so many treatments that you can honestly tell them that you’re going to get better. You can give them hope, and I think that’s a very powerful thing. To give someone hope when
they’re feeling the worst is something that makes
me want to practice this over and over again. (gentle music)
