Meet Reshma Marri-Gottam, MD, Rheumatology Arthritis | Ascension Michigan

My name is Reshma Marri-Gottam, and I specialize
in rheumatology. I chose to go into rheumatology primarily
because now it’s the 21st century, there’s so many advances in medicine, especially in
rheumatology. Back several decades ago there really wasn’t
much treatment options out there, so it’s very nice to see positive outcomes in patients. It makes it more fun for me as well. In terms of what makes it rewarding, now it’s
2019 I can see patients who are completely debilitated the first time they come and see
me. Then a few months go by, maybe a year, but
some time goes by and they’re living their normal life as best as they can. For example, I had a patient who could not
even eat properly at one point because they had a muscle disease. About a year later they were eating a normal
Thanksgiving dinner, that makes a big difference for me as to why I do what I do. Especially in the field of rheumatology I
believe listening is of the utmost importance, primarily because not every patient with the
same diagnosis presents the same way. Listening to their symptoms, the subtleties
of their symptoms can really make the difference in diagnosis. The field of rheumatology is very difficult,
even most rheumatologists and most physicians find it a hard field to grasp. So listening I believe becomes very, very,
very important at that point. I have an 11 month old, so my husband and
I like to spend time with her right now. It’s pretty much all we do these days in the
last 11 months, but prior to that and even now I do enjoy cooking. Just taking strolls, I love just sitting at
coffee shops. Just little everyday things like that.
