Meet Physiatrist Leigh Hanke, MD, MS

– The goal that we have is
trying to optimize your function in addition to controlling the pain. I’m in the field of
physical medicine rehab, known as a physiatrist, specifically in sports medicine
and interventional spine. So as a physiatrist, I
think one of our strength is we’re looking at the person as a whole and how the whole body functions together because if you fix only one area, you don’t necessarily fix or
improve function in general. There’s adolescents who’ve come to me who haven’t been able to
play the sport they wanted to and then older patients who thought that they had to give up
sports, like tennis or skiing because they were told there
was nothing to be done. Sometimes people will
eventually need surgery, but if we can out that
off as long as possible or avoid it altogether,
that can be very helpful for the patient. And it’s very rewarding
to have someone come in who’s has pain for so long and be able to really come to a good diagnosis and then be able to
address that and see them all of a sudden not only
have their pain controlled, but doing the things they
hadn’t been able to do for many years.
