Like whose excuse not to go out is because she’s itchy, you know? Oh I can’t go out, I’m itchy. I’m Germaine, and I live with eczema. Earliest memory was at the doctor’s When, my dad was clarifying what would be the cure.. and the doctor said there is no cure, it is just controlling the symptoms. I had to go in baths with special water. Yeah, I remember that water actually, it’s like purple in colour. In the past, the condition of my skin would be a determining factor of whether I go out or not. And it’s not only because of what other
people see or do, it’s also a personal comfort. Like if I go out, its dusty and anything might make my skin itchy. There’s always that chance, that trigger and I don’t know what it will be, but I always have to be aware and prepared and defensive. Out of all that negativity, I still manage to find myself feeling grateful and hopeful because of the support I have, my family, my friends they all also have learnt to put my skin first. In terms of what to eat at home, what we buy from the supermarket. In terms like group activities that we have….. there’s that consideration which I’m thankful for. Through that 28 years of trial and error
and finding what works, finding what doesn’t, not giving up, you naturally learn how to manage better. My skin is what’s made me become who I am today. I wouldn’t have certain characteristics
without my skin. I wouldn’t have certain habits
without my skin. and I think that, that’s what makes me unique. Stay positive. Don’t give up. Just keep looking for that one thing that works for your skin.
