Folliculitis – Daily Do’s of Dermatology

Folliculitis – Daily Do’s of Dermatology

So here’s another daily tip from your friendly local dermatologist. Folliculitis is an inflammation of your hair
follicles. And what happens is, every time a hair exits your body, you will see a little red circle right in
the center of that hair, and all that is is an inflammation or a slight infection of that hair follicle. A lot of times, it happens where things are getting rubbed, because as something is getting rubbed, that hair follicle is getting bent back and forth, and it causes irritation and increases the chances that perhaps a bacteria can grow underneath as this hair follicle is getting bent back and forth. Now there are some tricks that we can do to help you, and there’s an over the counter medication called benzoyl peroxide. The one I use is called Oxy, and you just wash the affected area about once a day, let the benzoyl peroxide acne wash sit on the area for about 20 to 30 seconds, rinse it off completely, and then pat dry with a white towel. This benzoyl peroxide will bleach anything
that comes in contact with so, please be careful to rinse it off completely. Now, this is probably somewhat of a genetic tendency for you. And so you might be needing to use this benzoyl peroxide long-term to keep the folliculitis from actually even flaring. If the benzoyl
peroxide acne wash works and you’re happy then stick with it. If it doesn’t work, then please see your local dermatologist because we have lots of tricks that we can try. But the last thing that I will say is this
Folliculitis, this inflammation of your hair follicle, it is a distant cousin of acne. Because acne is also a problem of the hair follicle or the pilosebaceous unit. And so just like with acne, I really want you to be cautious about what you’re consuming. Guys, please make sure that you’re not having a poor diet. Please eat well. Lower inflammation diet. We have videos on this. I don’t know how this advice can turn you
in the wrong direction, and it might even help keep this folliculitis at bay even better
than anything that I can do.
