Psoriasis is a serious skin condition that we commonly encounter. There are varying degrees of severity. Sometimes, patients come
in with just plaques on their elbows or knees. And sometimes, they can have extensive body surface area involvement, sometimes associated with joint pain and joint swelling as well. There’s the physical
component or discomfort associated with psoriasis. And then, there’s also the
psychosocial component. These people frequently are uncomfortable wearing shorts during the summer months. Young people changing in a locker room, it can be traumatic for them. The condition is sometimes perceived as contagious by those around them. It’s really a difficult
disease for these patients. We have all sorts of therapies. Therapies involve the
use of topical steroids for milder cases, intralesional
steroids in some instances. And now, we have a class of
medications known as biologics which can literally take
someone who’s covered with psoriasis plaques, and you can’t tell they have the disease. So there have been amazing advancements in the treatment of psoriasis.
