I don’t like heights very much. I would rather not go
to the top of the building… and stand by the edge. Or by the edge of a cliff. You have fear and vertigo
at the same time? No, I don’t have vertigo.
It’s just fear. I can see myself falling over
if I go near, or the children. What about the dark?
Do you like to be in the dark? – No, I don’t. Not very much.
– No, you don’t. I sleep in the dark… but if I wake up and it’s dark… I’d rather, I sort of switch on
the light quickly. What about thunderstorms? They don’t bother me
as long as they’ re not too close. They’re over headed. If I can hear them in the distance,
it’s not bad. You’re afraid of mice? Fear of mice? No, I’m not afraid of mice. Again, I don’t like them
if they’re running around my feet. But if somebody gives me one,
I can pick one up. If it’s a pet mouse. Are you afraid of cancer? I mean, you have a fear now… Yes, I’ve always been
afraid of cancer. Since they told you about
your mastopathy… or before that even? Well, I’ve had it so long…
the mastopathy… that… I think it’s a general fear,
a fear of cancer. That overwhelms you or… overwhelms you sometimes,
that fear? For instance, it paralyzes you
for some moments, then you… It didn’t till I knew
what I’d got. When you find lumps
in your breasts… immediately you think
you’ve got cancer. Until you’ve been to the doctor
and have it checked. that’s why I used to go
to the doctor straight away. When he told me it was alright,
your fear just goes away. But since I read this article,
I’ve been worried again. – You put weight easily?
– Yes. Very easily? And you lose it
with great difficulty? – Yes.
– That’s the case. I’m always trying
not to eat. – You like eggs?
– Yes. What form? – Soft boiled?
– Soft boiled usually. I’m not keen on
hard boiled eggs. – You’re not keen.
– No. I like fried eggs, poached eggs. – You have a good appetite in general.
– Yes. – Very good appetite.
– Very good. – You want to reduce it.
– I would like to reduce it. Yes, I’m always hungry. We try to bring a balance
in the whole individual. This is the aim in homeopathy,
in good homeopathy at least. To bring about a balance
in the whole of the individual. This is not only an aim. But also it’s a fact. When the correct remedies
are given… that feeling of well being
in the whole individual is there. The first thing that they will say
“I feel so well in general!” Even if his pain in the knee
is still somewhat there. Why do you ask all these
strange questions? You see, we are interested in how
your whole organism is working. When you have an anxiety, there is
a defense that the body is putting. The best that he can have. When You’re feeling cold,
this is his defense. He says “don’t let me uncovered,
cover me”. This is his defense. When he says “give me sweets”… that means the level of sugar
is low. “Give me something sweet”. When he says “give me soft boiled
eggs”… it means “give me a little bit
more calcium”. Because soft boiled eggs
are full of calcium. And you take it easily. So, all these are put together… and finally we find out
how your system works. And why it has this kind of
symptomatology that bothers you. You also say you put on weight
very easily. That is a problem in metabolism. But if I have something else
as well… I mean not that I have anything else
now… will the remedy cure that as well? Right. Whatever can be cured,
it will cure. Whatever is irreversible,
it will not cure it. But whatever can be cured,
it will cure. And it will cure the whole organism. The whole organism will come
into balance again. You will desire less sweets… you will not be putting on
so much weight so easily. Good! These kind of things will happen
when the organism is balanced. It is a very difficult job. Because we’ll try to find
the remedy… that suits your temperament,
your personality. Your defenses, your defence
mechanism. How you put up so easily
the fear of cancer. it’s not me that I’m doing it! it’s you! George Vithoulkas brought homeopathy
to Greece 20 years ago. He’s practiced and taught it
in Athens ever since. When George first set up
his practice… he had to find a pharmacist
willing to learn… how to make out the 2.000
homeopathic remedies he uses. Pavlos Stefanidis was the first
pharmacist to work alongside George. He’s continued to make out and
dispense the remedies… for his 3 pharmacies. The remedies are either plant,
mineral or animal based. But sometimes they can be a product
of the disease itself. This herbal extract is diluted
with water and alcohol… and shaken until it becomes, what
the homeopaths call “potentised”. Remedies are made in varying
strengths by this process… which has to be performed
by absolute precision. The more the remedy is shaken
or diluted… the greater its strength. Once diluted, there is not
a single molecule… of the original substance left. But homeopaths believe the energy
remains despite the dilution. and that’s what makes
the remedy active. By adding lactose it’s turned
to powder… before one last succession. The remedy is then ready
to be stored… in one of Pavlos’ specially made
drawers… hidden from heat and
direct sunlight… both of which are thought to destroy
its therapeutic value. These remedies are aimed
to achieve something… totally different to those
prescribed by a conventional doctor. Each remedy has been tested
as an undiluted substance… on healthy people. Homeopathy believes… if a substance can produce
the symptoms in a healthy person… it can cure them in an unhealthy
person. Everybody says “Look
at the whole person!”. But finally he takes a pain killer
for his knee. What about his anxieties,
his depressions, his fears? That has on another level. “Give him a Valium!” But Valium does not take care
of the knee. The pain killer will not take care
of the anxiety. Valium will not take care
of the lower memory of the person. Actually, sometimes by taking
a drug… allopathic drug as we call it… a person may have, what we all know
as side effects. Which means some portion
of the human being is patched up… and some other portion is suffering. At the same time,
because of the medicine. George was an engineer… before studying homeopathy
in S. Africa and in India. On his return to Athens… he founded the Athenian School
of Homeopathic Medicine. A clinic with 27 practicing
homeopaths… because George believes this is
the best way to learn homeopathy. He is the only homeopath in Greece
who’s not a doctor of Medicine. When he returns here… even the trained homeopaths
want to sit in… and learn from his case taking. The heart does not flutter… it’s kind of a feeling…
I can’t describe it really. it’s kind of a dull feeling,
not aching. it’s kind of a howl,
right here in the middle. – So, that’s the problem.
– I see. – In the low back I pain for years.
– For years. I’ve learned to live with it. Maybe it’s my occupation,
I lean over at work. I’m working in this position. I jog everyday, I swim,
and I try to be fit. I’ve tried all the disciplines,
I’m a vegetarian for 25 years. you’re vegetarian. I’ve a pain in my head
for a couple of years now. – A couple of years now?
– A couple of years. I went to a dermatologist
in Florida, USA… when I first noticed this problem. And he gave me some cortisone
based ointment. I put it on and it gets better. When I don’t put it on
it comes back. So, I quit using it.
I don’t like using any cortisone. I don’t like to take any
medications, not even an aspirin. The back pain, is it when you sit
for some time in a chair? – Then, you try to get up.
– And then I feel it. Now I don’t feel but that day
I started feeling it. What is the worst position
that you put your back? The worst position? – You mean, when do I feel this pain?
– Yes. I guess when I’m leaning over. Looking at these kids,
all they want and I’m leaning over. You know, with the anxiety and the
stress in the office, the confusion. It might tend to accentuate,
I don’t know. What is this really
that you crave for? Like foods and vegetables
in general? Foods, vegetables… I like getting anything natural,
anything raw and natural. Like a raw salad or fresh fruits. And I like nuts. The Homeopaths’ Bible
is the “Materia Medica”. It enlists all the remedies,
it goes into great details… in the description of the symptoms
to which they apply. Sweets, do you like? I used to like sweets
but I eliminated them in my diet. Not because I don’t like them… but because I know
They’re bad for me. And so consequently I’ve learned
to avoid them… and I’ve lost my desire for sweets. But I like sweet fruits. Raisins or dates or figs,
something like that. I eat a little bit and that’s it.
I don’t crave them. I don’t eat excessive amount
of fruit. You understand how
our medicines act. I’d like to learn about it. Let us say, a normal person… will have a kind of…
almost normal diagram. Like that. And is acting… His body is in balance. And if stress is attacking
this organism… then the organism, in order
to counteract the attack… produces symptoms. Symptoms are the defense
of the body. So, therefore this kind of draft… will change into…
this type of draft… with bigger or smaller symptoms. In order to counteract the attack
from whatever stress. Whether it’s virus, it’s stress,
it’s hereditary weakness… that they try to fight. We’re giving more force
to the defenses… in order that finally, through
that manifestation of symptomatology the organism tries to regain
its lost balance. So, we put together
the whole individual… mental, emotional and physical… in order to see how the defenses
are working. Because an anxiety is a defense,
a fear is a defence. The remedies definitely operate
on all those levels. They operate actually
on an energy level… which is behind
all those 3 levels… which energizes, which vitalizes
the body… which gives life to the body. We cannot pin down
that energy yet. We cannot show it on an X-ray. But it is definitely there. If I speak, it is the energy in me
that speaks. An hour away from Athens… it’s the ancient healing site
of the Amphiareion. It was built over 2.000 years ago… and people came here from all over
Greece with their problems… believing that the Gods would advise
them during their sleep. From time to time, George likes
to return here. it’s a place where he finds it
easier to think about his work… and to replenish his energy. The great Greek physician,
Hippocrates, believed… that “like could cure like”. The idea was taken up
by Samuel Hahnemann in 1790. He studied Medicine at
the University of Leipzig… but was disillusioned
with bloodletting leeches… and the use of toxic chemicals. Hahnemann came across a paper
that concluded… that the successful treatment
of malaria with a Peruvian bark… was due to its bitterness. Unconvinced, he experimented
on himself… and experienced all the symptoms
of the disease. Next he collected the details
of accidental poisonings. And he and other doctors began
systematically testing substances… on themselves. They recorded these observations
for 6 years… and their work still forms the basis
of modern homeopathy. Alonissos, a remote island
in the Sporades. George has built a house here… this is where he comes to work on
the Materia Medica he’s compiling. As a child he never visited
the country. In fact, the first time he left
Athens was at the age of 20. But this is the place
he wants to retire to. There’s not a lot of time for
George to go fishing… or look after his small plot
of land. For 9 months of the year
he’s abroad… teaching fellow homeopaths and
seeing the most difficult cases. Homeopathy challenged Orthodox
Medicine throughout the 19th century It retreated in the face
of new scientific drugs… but as their limitations
become apparent… homeopathy is gaining
strength again. Today it’s the second most widely
practiced system of Medicine… and George’s work takes him
all over the world. A God sunshine, the sea and
a relatively uncomplicated life… stress free lifestyle, all
contribute George feels to Greek people being easier to
treat than most Americans… or North Europeans. When he returns to Alonissos,
the word gets out in the island… as flock to his door
to have their cases taken. It’s my knees and all my joints
ache. – Is your waist very painful?
– My waist is very painful. – When is it painful?
– When I am tired. – When you bend to pick up grass?
– No, it’s not painful when I bend. So it’s painful when you’re tired. When I walk the pain affects me
most. Have you had any major illnesses? You’ve been healthy all your life.
But do you sweat a lot? Sweat a lot! And how! Where do you sweat most, your
armpits, your face, your head? Everywhere, from the head
downwards. Do you wake up with aching joints
and stiffness? And when do the pains disappear? When you walk, do they disappear
immediately, or after some time? When I take a few steps,
they then disappear. Do you ache at all in bed? What about when you move around
in bed? Yes, when I turn over
my feet ache. – Is there anything else?
– Nothing else. that’s it. – Do you sleep well?
– Not if I don’t take a pill. Do you know what the sleeping pills
are called? – They’re called Tavor.
– Is it caused by anxiety? When I can’t sleep, my stomach
starts churning. – Is it like throbbing or tightening?
– It feels like a throbbing. When it happens,
how does it affect you? – It really distresses me.
– In what way? It feels like something
squeezing me inside… at first I was up all night and
didn’t know what to do. – Do you ever feel breathless?
– No, I don’t. So it’s just the throbbing
in your stomach? Drink this. – Thank you.
– You’re welcome. I have come to the conclusion
actually… that the health of our race,
especially of the western people… is deteriorating rapidly. And the defenses of the body
are going down… with great speed. As a result we will have
human beings with no defenses. And we see AIDS today. And we see a lot of other
new diseases appearing… that they don’t know
where they come from. 15 years ago, when I was lecturing
in Athens in medical groups… I was predicting that,
through a lot of antibiotics… tremendously huge amounts of
antibiotics human race is ingesting and also hormones, and also
vaccinations… the immune system gets weaker
and weaker. And finally will be open to
new viruses, to new diseases… that will be very violent. The antibiotics, you may need… because with homeopathy and
other alternative therapies… you may not come to the right
conclusion and you may have a case which is a matter of life
and death. So, you may give antibiotics. But immediately start
with homeopathy… rebuild his immune system. Twice a year George holds a 2 week
seminar on Alonissos… for his students from all over
the world. They are all practising homeopaths.. and most of them qualified
in Orthodox Medicine. A lot of them travel from other
european countries… but some of them have come from
as far as America and New Zealand. Here in the village school, George
discusses his new findings… on some of the remedies,
takes students’ cases… and presents some of his most
problematic cases on video. And in all cases I’m trying to find
out what was the causative factor. Many times we see
it is chemical drugs. And other times we see
it is great stresses. The first time you had your knee
it was in high school, 16 years old? 18 years old. The first time you went
to the doctor… you had arthritis, 19 years old
you had your hip… 20 years old you had again
arthritis and… What you call this?
What is this expression? – Rigid?
– No, not rigid. For look.
Staring! Staring! You know, he looks,
it is there, with fear inside. The look and then the effort
to think. I’m just reading
from “Materia Medica”… the description of that particular
mind or person who needs a remedy. He says “Forgetful, thoughtless… staring… slow to comprehend”, that’s all. You see the effort,
the effort to think… you see, making an effort
and then staring! And then there is something else
inside… which I will show you
in the video. Was there any incident
that created great fear? You saw a robbery or
you saw somebody killed… or you saw your father
attacking your mother? I mean anything that created
a great fear. I had an incident… that I remember once in a while… and it still bothers me. You want to know about the incident? I used to be a lifeguard and… – A lifeguard?
– Yes, watching the water. And I was called to an area
to bring a first aid kit… for someone who is injured,
who had cut their foot. And while I was there,
a woman came over… and said that her and her boyfriend
had tried to swim across the lake. And she turned around
and her boyfriend was gone. And the other lifeguards and myself
had to dive to find this person. And I was the one who found him. I was diving into the water
and swimming… and sort of… and sort of larky water, you could
see maybe this far in front of you. And I sort of came onto this person
and he was looking up… at the bottom of the lake. It was a scary experience. Even though I knew I had
to bring him up… it scared me so bad that I couldn’t
physically bring him up. Well, curiacum 200. Will prescribe in this case. And the first thing that changed
according to the information. The medical doctor who was
attending him was a friend actually of his family. And he brought the information
of his family as well… his own observations. That the mental condition of
this boy improved after Curiacum… to the extent that he is talking
much more easily now, and faster. And his pains, within a month,
within a month and a half… have been reduced to half. His pain also have been reduced
quite significantly… without still being able
to walk freely. I expected this case
would need repetition.. because of the severity
of the case… because of the potency
being very long… would need a repetition
after a few months. Most probably there would be
a relapse… and you will need
a higher potency. And perhaps a series of potencies
on Guaiacum… before he could go to another remedy
most probably. This type of diseases
are not curable easily… and not in a short time. You will expect a cure to effect
within 2 or 3 years in this case. But all this time, improving,
improving, improving… but slowly. Now, as the improvement will take
place, there will be times… where the psoriasis and
the arthritis will improve together. There will be times when the
psoriasis will look more improving… and the arthritis will look
more aggravated. But on the whole, the pattern
that we’ll show in the end… will be a diminution
of the arthritis… and an increase of the psoriasis. To what extent his arthritis
will be diminished? How much permanent structural
changes have been affected… by all these inflammations
in the joints? We do not know. But this boy, definitely,
he will be able to walk again. Homeopaths name the symptoms
of a disease after its remedy. So, silica is the remedy, a person
becomes a silica case. Blair has his case taken by George
and his fellow students. I’m 30 years old… and been married 2 years… no children at this time. And two main concerns
physically… and first these headaches. Severe headaches,
usually on the right side. The headaches, at one point would
respond to some homeopathic remedies like Bryonia or Nux Vomica. And now the only thing they seem
to respond to… is osteopathic manipulation. In this point… he started telling his story,
he says right sided headaches. He did not mention left sided
at all. Therefore, when he says right sided,
which remedies will we be searching? Belladonna, sanguinaria
is exceptionally right sided. Belladonna. Belladonna, which is
a right sided remedy. Lycopodium, again a liver remedy. Chelidonium. Does he look like
a natrum muriaticum case? No, no! Why? How would you describe him? Etxrovert and calm. The other complain, yes? About the headaches, although this
isn’t really with the headaches… but in general, in the past… 2 or 3 years, my head
is really sensitive to wind. Like I can’t ride in the car
with the window rolled down. It will give me a headache
or just make me irritable. Another remedy we’ll be thinking,
if he tells that… he gets headaches from wind? It is the…? Famous remedy… What happened to you? – Sulphur.
– No. it’s a person that will walk
always with a hat. Because otherwise
will get a headache. Psorinum… You see, this is the problem. You expect to hear exactly
the words. I cannot get out with a hat,
otherwise I will get a headache. But this is what he is saying. He has to wear something
on his head… otherwise the wind will bring on
the headache. Why do you have to hear
exactly the phrase? We are dealing with
analogous situations. What is the remedy that will most
fit his personality? Silica or psorinum? Silica. Silica can fit.
Why silica? Now, there is a sign in him… that says silica
more than psorinum. Which is that sign? Which is that sign? Baldness. Look at his baldness. You see baldness in a man… silica is one of the remedies
that produces baldness. that’s why when he gives a symptom
characteristic of silica… being bald, we will tend to think
of silica. Now, in order to be a silica patient
what does he have to have? Sweats, or sweat in feet,
or sweats in different places… but mostly he has to have
an aggravation from…? From cold.
An aggravation from cold. Very good. Well that’s the other thing
that causes headaches… is that my head cannot get cold. Homeopathy, actually I feel,
has been abused. The name has been abused. Because homeopathy is when… a physician or homeopathic practitioner
tries to find that remedy… that has produced the symptomatology
of the person. Now, in many instances… because the practitioner or the
physician is lazy or not knowledgeable.. instead of trying to find out
that remedy… the only one that is required… he will give 10, 20, 30, 40 remedies
at a time. Hoping that in these 40
it’s the one, the correct one. We have a knowledge of sulphur
given mostly by Kent, right? I feel that this picture… as it is presented in the end
of the 19th century, of sulphur… is not representative of the picture
of sulphur of today. We have basically two types
of sulphur… both of them consuming a great
amount of food and drink… all kinds of drinking. First, with a high metabolism… and the one is very lean and
the other one is quite plethoric. And sometimes obese. Because of that tendency of sulphur
to consume a lot of food… today we have a lot of
high cholesterol cases… which need sulphur. Also, again because
of the same reason… we have another disease, which is
a contemporary disease, which is… diabetes. Which will be amenable
to sulphur. High blood pressure. Ulcerative colitis. Insomnia cases. Usually, he does not take care
of his appearance at all… because he has some
superior knowledge… or a kind of better knowledge
than others… that gives him the possibility
to stand by this knowledge… and disregard social circumstances where he has to appear dressed
properly, clean. Even when things are reaching
an extreme… where he feels his all odours
from the body are bothering him. He will go and wash locally. He does not have the energy
or the interest… to just clean himself up. What is your problem? Really, I think I’m beginning
to get arthritis. It is known to my family. In fact my mother died 6 months
ago… and on the death they gave arthritis
as one of the causes… because of the amount of medicines
that she’d had to have. it’s not bad… but really I’m conscious that my
feet are very tender at the bottom – The soles of the feet?
– The soles, yes. I wondered if it is possible
to do something about this… to prevent it getting
to the terrible stages… that I’ve seen to get,
it can be just horrendous! Alright. You feel that tenderness mostly
in the morning, when you wake up… and you step in…? Yes, I find, I don’t like
walking on marble now… I immediately put shoes on
when I get up… which I never used to do… I used to ramble around
quite happily without bothering. Yes, I think in the morning… I’m not stiff at all,
I’m so very subtle. What else? – I don’t sleep well.
– You don’t sleep well. But I don’t think that’s terrible. it’s not something
that is absolutely ghastly. I’m slightly worried
about the arthritis… because… – Because of the family history.
– Yes. When you wake up,
are you feeling tired? No, not then. Sometimes I get up and paddle
round the house and do things. it’s ok, I can do that. But sometimes I just sit in bed
and read. That is also something
that is in the family. My mother has the same thing
there. This is why… Do you have cold feet
or very warm feet…? Now, again, I noticed I put
a blanket at the bottom of the bed because I think it’s the arthritis. – You need more warm…
– For my feet, warm my feet. – Yes.
– I see. Can you describe a little bit
your character? What type of a person you are. I think I’m fairly nervous. I’ve got a degree in Physics,
I mean I’m presumably fairly… but I worry quite a lot I think. But it’s difficult. I’m a fairly conventional person,
I have three children, a husband. I’m a fairly sort of normal person. Are you easily irritated, angry? I think I am, but other people
tell me I keep very calm. – Are you weeping easily?
– No. Even if you see a picture
at the cinema, will you weep? Sometimes, but not a lot. But you’re not a weepy person. I think I was as a child but I must
say I tried to stop myself. But not now, no. Are you a person that keeps
in order… – No, I’m chaotic.
– What? I’m chaotic. What about your appetite?
it’s good? – Yes, I eat a lot.
– You eat a lot. Do you have the need to eat
something… special? For instance, meat
or fish… – Or sweets.
– Sweets… I don’t eat sweet things,
very little. – You do not like.
– No, I do not like sweet things. In your family, except of arthritis,
was there any other problem… any other disease,
like tuberculosis or so. There is diabetes in my family
as well. You never wanted sweets or you
decided it’s not good for health… and so you rejected? I don’t think it’s good, particularly
with the history of diabetes but I was told to avoid it. You were told, at what age? Quite a young woman. – You don’t remember if you had…
– A sweet tooth? No, I can’t really. I’m sorry. That’s ok. I think your case
is rather simple… and I hope to be able
to help you. I will give you a remedy
which is called sulphur. I keep on having this ideal… that the world will someday
understand… what homeopathy can offer
to the human race. And they will take it up
and homeopathy will take its place. I still have this hope… and I believe… that perhaps within my time
my students will take it up further and will spread it. And one day, I don’t know
if it takes 50 years from now… homeopathy will be the prevalent
therapeutics system… with an assistance from another
discipline and allopathic Medicine. 5 months after filming, Lesley’s
feet are no longer tender… and she can walk barefoot again. John’s back problem and heart pain
have virtually disappeared. But he still has psoriasis. George told him that would be
the last symptom to go. The only fear I have
is having breast cancer. Mary’s breast cysts are smaller
and less painful. She feels calmer and less anxious
about her health… and she no longer suffers
ovulation pain. We’ve got to go fishing
somewhere else now. Start the engine, Petros!
