Can Cannabis Cure Cancer?

Can Cannabis Cure Cancer?

“Can Cannabis Cure Cancer?” Cannabis and cancer: reality
or pipe dream quackery? Among alternative cancer treatments, cannabis inhabits a peculiarly
politicized position, hailed as a suppressed
panacea by some, denounced as a
dangerous drug by others. At the far end of the
spectrum are those who insist cannabis helped cure their cancer. “The promise, and even the hype,
can reach hysterical proportions, with claims of cannabis
cancer cures circulating in cyberspace at
a furious pace. The problem is that sometimes
a patient will have a cancer that’s curable with
conventional therapies, like you could cut it
out before it spreads but forgoes that treatment
in favor of something that just got good
online testimonials. Yes, cannabis compounds like
THC can reduce brain tumor volume in mice, or
suppress cancer cell growth in a petri dish. But, it turns out, mice
and rats are not people, and what is observed in vitro
does not necessarily translate into human clinical medicine. Why not just give
it a try, though? Because there’s other evidence
that cannabis compounds may encourage cancer growth. Like THC inhibiting
anti-cancer immunity, or inducing cancer
cell proliferation, enhancing breast cancer
growth and metastasis by suppression of the
anti-tumor immune response. Yeah, but in mouse mammary tumors. You don’t know what
happens in people until… you put it to the test. But because of legal reasons few human studies have been done. But thankfully, after years
of a deep freeze on cannabis-related research,
funding, and materials, a thaw is starting. But where do you even start? Well, if cannabis compounds,
cannabinoids, are postulated to have a
potential anticancer effect working through the
cannabinoid receptors, it would follow that trying
it on cancer of the brain, where the receptors are
most densely concentrated would be the place to start. OK, well one of the
most devastating forms of cancer is glioblastoma,
a fast-growing type of malignant brain tumor. And that’s the first cancer
that was put to the test. Cannabis compounds sometimes
inhibit tumor growth in lab animals, However, anti-tumor effects
had never been tested in humans. So, here we go, the first
clinical study on cancer: specifically a pilot study in which nine patients with
recurrent glioblastoma meaning they had
the tumor cut out, they had the radiation treatments, but the cancer is back and is growing. Then they administered the THC
straight into the tumor. Basically they went
back into surgery, had a scoop carved out of
the center of their tumors and they stuck a
catheter in the middle with the other end sticking
out of their heads so they could drip
the THC straight into the tumor with a syringe. THC was already tested
on biopsy specimens and showed it
was able to kill some of the cancer cells
off in a petri dish. So, what happened
when it was tried on the patients themselves? The patients all died,
in a matter of months. In a few patients it seemed
to work for a few weeks maybe but then the
tumor took back off despite repeated treatments. This looks like their
most dramatic result. Here’s where the tumor
started before the treatment, and at four weeks had
dramatically shrunk down. 35-year-old guy. Oh, the whole family must have
been beside themselves. But, then it came
back with a vengeance, and despite more infusions got worse and then he was gone. With no control group, the
effect of the treatment on overall survival is unclear. This was both the first
clinical trial on cancer, and the only clinical
trial on cancer, even though it was published
over a decade ago. But the good news is: there are more than 15
trials currently underway. Perhaps the most exciting of which is a phase 2 trial in Israel, again looking at advanced cancers
that are progressing despite all standard treatments. In the meanwhile, if you are undergoing a standard treatment like chemo, at least we know
that cannabis may help with some of the side effects.

Don’t forget if there is a natural remedy for cancer that anyone can use or grow in their own home you can’t make money off of it! The pharmaceutical companies will never allow this or promote it.

"Cancers that are curable by cutting out the cancer" ? Not in this life. Only if you address the true cause that created whatever cancer you cut out can you call it a true cure. Until then it is not a cure but rather a relief of symptom. Medications, Supplements and operations never did and never will heal anything unless these interventions are able to return normal physiology. A body is self healing, but only when physiology is normalized.

My wife had Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. She took high doses of THC oil as a vaginal suppository, as recommended by her alternative therapy oncologist. Taken as a suppository, there was no hallucinary effects despite the very high dosages.

The medicinal marijuana did not save her, but it did: 1) suppress seizures (which she had before THC) without any other seizure medicine and 2) reduced pain. She died not taking any opioids or any other narcotics like morphine… she was lucid and not in pain when she died.

The medicinal marijuana was not taken until my wife’s cancer had progressed pretty far… we never considered it her sole or even primary treatment protocol. I do believe it was helpful with seizures and pain, though… much better than the prescription pills she was given.

More study is needed. Make a whole extract of the plant, not a single chemical extract of the plant. Use the whole extract in testing. I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to be test subjects for this. It's too early to be isolating chemicals from the plant and testing them. First see if a whole extract does anything. If it does, then start isolating chemicals until you find what works. Of course, human testing of this has to be balanced. Don't want undue death or suffering.

The way how I see it eventually someone is going to create a crazy strain that will destroy cancer cells and for now people could just use it to heavly relieve the symptoms of chemotherapy and a potential to avoid full body radiation. • heymisterderp says:

To put it mildly, the outcomes of conventional cancer treatment are not good. That we're even at this point still arguing the ins and outs of cannabis and health is almost criminal in 2018. We should be 50 years ahead of ourselves but the law has done a terrible disservice to us all and put us back generations of lost lives and suffering families. Moreover Delta 9-THC is not cannabis. Cannabis is a whole food comprised of upwards of 100 cannabinoids. Isolating out one component and throwing out the rest and doing cancer research on it then calling it "cannabis" is ignorant on top of stupid. I don't know how we lose the plot of whole-foods plant-based as soon as someone says "marijuana" but that's how it goes apparently.

As a person who has followed a whole food, plant based lifestyle for many years, I follow and have a lot of respect for Dr. Greger. However, since I’ve been helping people through the medical use of cannabis for close to 10 years now and know many of the top MD’s and researchers in the world in this field, I find that his comments regarding cannabis a bit lacking. While most serious people never use the word “cure” or “guarantee”, I have helped and/or know of numerous people who have used cannabis concentrates in either an oil or tincture form to put their cancers in remission. The first study I found regarding cannabis and cancer was by the Medical College of Virginia that was published in 1975. It is easily found through a Google search. It suggested that THC kills cancer cells while not affecting healthy cells. You would have thought that this study, done 43 years ago, would have generated a lot of testing and further research. The Ford Administration quickly de-funded further research and buried this report. Dr. Greger did mention that cannabis can promote tumor growth. This is true, but only in the case of hormone driven cancers being treated with high levels of THC. In these cases, the ratio of CBD to THC is extremely important. With these types of cancers people use a ratio of at least 3:1 CBD to THC. The best way to use cannabis is when the whole plant is used and all the cannabinoids are present in the product. Similar to how we eat whole foods. I’ve also put numerous dogs with cancer in remission. If you’re interested, I would suggest you watch any videos by Dr. Bonni Goldstein. She is one of the top MD’s in the world in the medical use of cannabis. She has treated close to 10,000 patients. She currently has over a year waiting list for her seizure and autistic pediatric patients. Another person to watch is Dr. Cristina Sanchez who is a top researcher. She has several videos out explaining the why and how cannabis kills cancer. We all know why very few human studies have been done, money. The same reason why doctors are so reluctant to recommend a whole food, plant based lifestyle. Further research is definitely needed, but people aren’t going to wait until we finally have sane politicians who are willing to forgo money from Big Pharma and de-schedule cannabis.

  • Seany Napalm says:

Wow how stupid. Dr Greger knows very well that vitamin A extracted from a carrot is a waste of time and hardly has any effect on humans. Its the same with most supplements. Once extracted it often even becomes toxic. WHOLE plants is the key… use marijuana in its whole state! Extracted thc … i mean really who thought that would work!?!?!? Just crazy …

  • John McCauley says:

Evidence showing canna oils to be somewhat effective should be tiered in ratios of THC content to find the sweet spot if using female plant buds or leaves. We can then compare results to hemp oil which has no THC.

  • adamaj says:

And why would they test it like that? Why inject it straight into the tumor? Nobody ever claimed that THAT would cure cancer. There's a huge difference between injecting isolated straight THC/CBD into a tumor and ingesting cannabis as a whole and letting your body do it's thing with all the vitamins, minerals, THC, CBD, and dozens of other compounds we know nothing about. Who knows how the body breaks all that down, recombines and utilizes it to do various helpful functions in the body, like fight cancer. There's a whole system in our bodies just for handling cannabinoids and by injecting isolated THC directly into the tumor, they not only skipped that whole system, they also committed a no-no by isolating a compound from the whole (which is why Dr. Greger is so against supplements). That study was a waste and proved nothing, imo. It'd be like injecting food directly into your muscle tissue instead of eating the food, digesting it, and letting your body perform its magic.

I've seen this kind of result in my cancer immunology work when we just used one drug or one antibody instead of combining them. You need a 1-2 punch here. It looks like the cannabis killed off the weaker cells, leaving only the really potent cancer cells behind that were resistant, and after that the entire tumor was resistant to the treatment and the cannabis no longer worked. If they could combine the cannabis treatment with some kind of antibody combo that took the foot off the brakes of the killer T-cells and hit the gas, or some other treatment that could target the resistant cells in conjunction with the cannabis, they'd have a much higher likelihood of curing it. So don't be discouraged. This is a really encouraging study.

People with cancer and their families are the only ones looking for a cure. The medical industry has become nothing, but a scam. Pharmaceuticals kill over 100,000 people every year, in America alone, taken as directed. Many more are killed by overdose or medical error. Most pharmaceuticals only treat symptoms and do not cure diseases and are very dangerous yet they are legal. The medical industry is run by the pharmaceuticals, from higher education to the doctors office to research…they run it all. Cancer is too profitable to cure like every other disease, they won't allow it. Medical debt is one of the leading ways that Americans are being drained of their wealth. Something is really wrong with that picture.

  • spliter227 says:

One gram of whole plant extract every day for 90 days is what the cannabis consultants in California claim will eliminate cancer from the body. The first study and the graph at 1:00 is erroneous. Making sense of what we're looking at, it should read (in red):

THC (15mg/kg) + TMZ (5mg/kg). THC was erroneously changed to "THZ" making it easy to misread the graph. There is no "THZ" in the graph of the actual study. While THC alone seemed (according to this video) to make the cancer grow faster, THC combined with the chemotherapy drug Temozolomide shows a far better result than the chemo drug alone.

BUT this is also false. Dr. Greger reversed the VEH curve with the THC curve. Why? If one looks at the actual study linked below, the VEH curve is the highest one, and the THC curve is below it demonstrating a benefit from the THC alone. How could these mistakes have been made? Accident?

  • max carter says:

it might be easier to just say there is not enough evidence. And not to mention full cannabis extract is better then just THC in some cancers. Some require more cbd then thc. Some more Thc . This trial didnt show a lot considering these people were destroyed by chemo and radiation already. And even then, it still had some effect. We need more studies done though. And not with people already on their death beds after the chemo and radiation didnt work and about killed them. Cannabinoids may not work with every cancer. Diet needs to be evaluated as well. Maybe it would be better to do a video after a number of clinical trials instead of one that leaves more questions then answers , Im not saying this works or not, but its doing something because a lot of people have been helped with it. and not just for side effects of chemo. This video was premature and left out a lot of data. Kind of pointless to form an opinion with only partial information.

Inhibition of colon carcinogenesis by a standardized Cannabis sativa extract with high content of cannabidiol.
    Romano B1, Borrelli F2, Pagano E2, Cascio MG3, Pertwee RG3, Izzo AA4.
    Author information
Colon cancer is a major public health problem. Cannabis-based medicines are useful adjunctive treatments in cancer patients. Here, we have investigated the effect of a standardized Cannabis sativa extract with high content of cannabidiol (CBD), here named CBD BDS, i.e. CBD botanical drug substance, on colorectal cancer cell proliferation and in experimental models of colon cancer in vivo.

Proliferation was evaluated in colorectal carcinoma (DLD-1 and HCT116) as well as in healthy colonic cells using the MTT assay. CBD BDS binding was evaluated by its ability to displace [(3)H]CP55940 from human cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors. In vivo, the effect of CBD BDS was examined on the preneoplastic lesions (aberrant crypt foci), polyps and tumours induced by the carcinogenic agent azoxymethane (AOM) as well as in a xenograft model of colon cancer in mice.

CBD BDS and CBD reduced cell proliferation in tumoral, but not in healthy, cells. The effect of CBD BDS was counteracted by selective CB1 and CB2 receptor antagonists. Pure CBD reduced cell proliferation in a CB1-sensitive antagonist manner only. In binding assays, CBD BDS showed greater affinity than pure CBD for both CB1 and CB2 receptors, with pure CBD having very little affinity. In vivo, CBD BDS reduced AOM-induced preneoplastic lesions and polyps as well as tumour growth in the xenograft model of colon cancer.

CBD BDS attenuates colon carcinogenesis and inhibits colorectal cancer cell proliferation via CB1 and CB2 receptor activation. The results may have some clinical relevance for the use of Cannabis-based medicines in cancer patients.

Cannabidiol rather than Cannabis sativa extracts inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis in cervical cancer cells.
    Lukhele ST1, Motadi LR2.
    Author information
Cervical cancer remains a global health related issue among females of Sub-Saharan Africa, with over half a million new cases reported each year. Different therapeutic regimens have been suggested in various regions of Africa, however, over a quarter of a million women die of cervical cancer, annually. This makes it the most lethal cancer amongst black women and calls for urgent therapeutic strategies. In this study we compare the anti-proliferative effects of crude extract of Cannabis sativa and its main compound cannabidiol on different cervical cancer cell lines.

To achieve our aim, phytochemical screening, MTT assay, cell growth analysis, flow cytometry, morphology analysis, Western blot, caspase 3/7 assay, and ATP measurement assay were conducted.

Results obtained indicate that both cannabidiol and Cannabis sativa extracts were able to halt cell proliferation in all cell lines at varying concentrations. They further revealed that apoptosis was induced by cannabidiol as shown by increased subG0/G1 and apoptosis through annexin V. Apoptosis was confirmed by overexpression of p53, caspase 3 and bax. Apoptosis induction was further confirmed by morphological changes, an increase in Caspase 3/7 and a decrease in the ATP levels.

In conclusion, these data suggest that cannabidiol rather than Cannabis sativa crude extracts prevent cell growth and induce cell death in cervical cancer cell lines.

  • EgadsNo says:

There is a cannabinoid which repairs the p53 gene. Which is a very important gene for tumors because it is responsible for not only creating a antitumor compound but is integral to the process of apoptosis. All tumors, but not all cancers must break this gene.

The big problem with cannabis as the only treatment for cancer is that THC breaks down into hundreds of different cannabinoids and there is a multitude of variables that affect this reaction as the biology of the plant is also highly involved.

There is a non toxic silver bullet in there though.

Cancer Free after using cannabis for stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma:
Darren Miller is one of those people who have used this oil to cure his ‘incurable’ lung cancer, and managed to survive, and live against the odds.
Initially, after his diagnosis, doctors informed him that he had a year to live, as he suffered from ‘inoperable incurable’ lung cancer.
His treatment included chemotherapy, but he decided to also try his chances using cannabis oil, as he has read numerous success stories about its potential.
Survival rates for lung cancer are incredibly low, with stage IA cancer survival rate at 50%, and for stage IV, only 1% of the patients manage to survive.
Darren decided to move to California with his wife in order to be able to legally try the cannabis oil treatment.
Only after 7 months, his cancer was gone! In an interview for the CBS News, he said:
“Today, which is seven months later, they tell me I am completely cancer-free – not remission. I’ve cured my cancer. Now, am I giving credit to the cannabis oil? Absolutely. Am I giving credit to chemo? I would have to say yes, too. I did both.”
His successful story made him want to help others in the similar position and set up his own cannabis oil treatment.

Cannabis oil cures cancer. Highest THC strain you can find, grown with sunlight, not HPS or LED. Takes 2 pounds of high quality bud mixed with 90% alcohol. Evaporate it down to an oil. Takes about 4 months to get rid of it. Rick Simpson has been doing this for years.

But did they eat a PLANT-BASED whole food diet while doing the cannabis treatment? Or did they keep eating animal products and processed foods cooked using high temperatures meanwhile? Because that might…… affect things. Put it to the test?

I would love it if THC was the cure for cancer. Heck, my initials are THCR!! (Yes, I have two middle names.) However, I have had two friends who smoked A LOT of very strong marijuana EVERY DAY OF THEIR LIVES FOR DECADES, and they both contracted cancer and one of them died! HOWEVER, there is indeed a cure for cancer that is extremely simple, and I have witnessed its effectiveness. This cure has long been known and has long been highly-suppressed, because it costs next to nothing. If you want to know more, give me a click.

The guy had a stage 4 cancer and you're saying this study is all inclusive? That's a pretty serious cancer with or without THC; so I'm not sure if this is going to do anything to convince me that cannabis won't cure cancer! Glioblastomas are almost always fatal. I myself had a stage 3 brain cancer removed. I'm using cannabis everyday. And the last two MRIs showed no new growth that's my study. I think I'm going to continue with this experiment. 🙂 the feds are resistant to allowing any clinical trials. They're actually preventing it I'm a veteran and they don't even allow us to smoke cannabis there. Although some do I'm sure
