Britton’s Story of Bravery

Britton’s Story of Bravery

In a moment, you’ll hear from Britton about
his experience with uncontrolled moderate atopic
dermatitis (eczema) and treatment with DUPIXENT® (dupilumab). Please watch and carefully review the Important
Safety Information presented in this video and
see the accompanying full Prescribing Information including Patient Information. DUPIXENT is a prescription medicine used to
treat people 12 years of age and older with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) that is not well controlled
with prescription therapies used on the skin (topical),
or who cannot use topical therapies. DUPIXENT
can be used with or without topical corticosteroids. It is not known if DUPIXENT is
safe and effective in children with atopic dermatitis under 12 years of age. Please remember that this video shares only
Britton’s experience and that every patient’s experience is unique. Everybody has to go through something in life. A lot of things are out of our control. But I think
these things happen for a reason. I think we face
challenges throughout life to make us stronger and to prepare us for the road ahead. That’s how
I see my journey with moderate atopic dermatitis. Growing up, my skin was flaking. My skin was
itching. My skin was red. When my atopic
dermatitis would flare, it would usually appear above my eyes, in the folds of my arms, and
behind my knees, and sometimes on my hands. Sometimes, other kids would ask why I was
wearing long pants or long sleeve shirts in the
summertime, and I would just make up excuses. I would just scratch constantly, and the itching
was something that I could never satisfy. Over the years, my mom and I saw specialist
after specialist. We tried all kinds of prescription
medications: Steroid creams, oral steroids, steroid
injections, and antihistamines. For me, the prescription medications would
work well for a short period of time, and then
my symptoms would return. As I grew into adulthood, I took a strong
interest in my disease. I would often go online and do
research about my condition. I eventually found
out that atopic dermatitis is caused in part by
inflammation beneath my skin. It was surprising to learn that the cause
was not just on the outside of my skin, that there
was a much deeper cause. I had a real curiosity about my skin. All this
research I had been doing, combined with my interest in helping people, really led me
into going into medicine. And that’s why now I’m a physician
assistant in the emergency room at a local hospital. One day, I was doing some research, and I
came across a medication that was still being tested. It was called dupilumab, and it was an injectable
treatment that was hopefully going to help adults
with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis have
clearer skin and less itching. I felt hopeful and
excited. After it was approved by the FDA as DUPIXENT, I decided to go see a new dermatologist and
talk with her about it. I was wondering if DUPIXENT
was an appropriate option for me. My dermatologist and I talked about the possible
benefits and side effects. She told me DUPIXENT
can cause serious side effects, including allergic
reactions and eye problems. And we went over the most common side effects,
which include injection site reactions, eye and
eyelid inflammation, including redness, swelling and itching, and cold
sores in your mouth or on your lips. Ultimately, we decided to move forward with
treatment. After I received my prescription, the team
at DUPIXENT MyWay reached out to me to explain
the process of obtaining the medication, to address any questions or concerns that I may
have. They helped me work with my insurance provider,
and without their help and support, I don’t really
know how I would have figured everything out. After starting treatment, I started noticing
some changes with my skin. I noticed that the redness
and irritation was reduced, and I noticed that the
overall texture of my skin was smoother. Slowly,
over time, my itching got less and less. Today, I feel like I can manage my atopic
dermatitis symptoms, and that is a huge relief! Of course, this is just my experience, and
everyone’s experience with DUPIXENT will be
different. Looking back, this journey with
moderate atopic dermatitis has made me a stronger person. I feel that there is a reason for
everything. Struggling with dry, itchy skin throughout
my life has led me to a career in the medical field
which allows me to help others. I hope that, through
sharing my story, people can realize that our
struggles can lead to something positive.
