Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a product that’s been around for over twenty years now. It’s been used globally in millions of people for a number of different indications. In particular, we’ve used it for cosmetic purposes, for treating frown lines, forehead lines, Crow’s Feet, and other areas of the face. Botox actually has a number of other benefits. We’ve used it for people who have excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, for people with migraine and even tension headaches, as well as a number of other things including bladder dysfunction, cereberal palsy, post-stroke spasticity, club foot, raynaud’s phenomenon, so actually Botox has been used for numerous indications over many years. It’s a very very safe treatment and it’s administered typically by physicians and dermatologists who have pioneered the work, and they are the experts in the use of botulinum toxin. We use it regularly in our practice successfully, typically for wrinkles due to movement, to what we call dynamic wrinkles, Botox essentially reduces the communication between your nerves and your muscles and so the forehead lines, frown lines, as well as the Crow’s Feet, would be the most common areas that we treat. It would last cosmetically, about 4 to 5 months in most cases; when done on a regular basis it may last further. It’s often combined with other treatments, including fillers and that deals with the whole aging process. We’ve got the dynamic wrinkles of the upper face, the forehead, frown lines, Crow’s Feet; that’s where Botox works great, and then we have fillers typically for the lower face, for the cheekbones, for the laugh lines, and for the marionette lines for example. To finish that off–we’re talking about the aging process– affecting surface, texture, and tone, the quality of the skin, redness, burst blood vessels, and brown spots, and that’s where chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and more specifically lasers work very well. Combining those three treatments: Botox, fillers, and either chemical peel, microdermabrasion and laser, that’s where you get the full anti-aging effect. Plus a good home regimen for anti-aging therapy, and of course, a terrific sunscreen is critical.
