Block the Sun Run-Walk to raise melanoma awareness

JONATHAN: WELCOME BACK. MAY IS MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH. A LOCAL ORGANIZATION WANTS TO SHOW YOU WAYS TO BLOCK THE SUN AND PREVENT SKIN CANCER. JOINING ME THIS MORNING TO TALK ABOUT IT, CANDY TAGGART FROM THE ANDY CARESS MELANOMA FOUNDATION AND DERMATOLOGIST DR. BRENT KIRKLAND. THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. TALK TO US ABOUT MELANOMA. IT’S ONE OF THE DEADLIEST SKIN CANCERS OUT THERE. AS MUCH AS WE CAN DO TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE, THAT’S WHAT WE WANT TO DO, HAVE PEOPLE CATCH IT EARLY. THAT WAY, WE CAN DIAGNOSE AND TREAT IT. JONATHAN: YOUR FOUNDATION WAS NAMED AFTER YOUR SON WAS DIAGNOSED AND PASSED AWAY FIVE YEARS AGO. THAT’S RIGHT. JONATHAN: YOU’VE CONTINUED YOUR EFFORTS. WE HAVE. HAD. JONATHAN: UNTIL IT’S TOUCHED YOUR LIVES, THE WAY IT HAS YOURS, IT’S HARD TO UNDERSTAND IT. THAT’S TRUE. THAT’S ONE REASON WE HAVE OUR BLOCK THE SUN RUN. IT’S A WAY TO HELP PEOPLE REALIZE THAT OVER EXPOSURE TO THE SKIN CAN BE HARMFUL, AND SO WE EMPHASIZE AWARENESS PREVENTION AND ARE ALSO RAISING MONEY FOR A CURE. SO OUR RACE IS AWARENESS, PREVENTION, AND THEN CURE. I NEVER REALLY EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THIS UNTIL I HAD MY OWN CHILDREN. THAT’S WHEN I STARTED TO THINK ABOUT THEIR SKIN. BUT IT’S INTERESTING. ONCE YOU PUT THAT SUN BLOCK ON THEM AND SEE THEM HAVE A NORMAL TIME IN THE SUN, YOU REALIZE THIS ISN’T THAT BIG A DEAL TO PREVENT, IS IT? YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE SMART ABOUT IT. WE SAY SPF 30 OR HIGHER. JONATHAN: NOW, WHAT ABOUT DURING THE WINTER AND MONTHS WHEN THE SUN ISN’T AS DIRECT? IS THAT SUN BLOCK STILL AS IMPORTANT? IT’S STILL IS, BECAUSE EVEN DURING THE WINTERTIME, THE ULTRAVIOLET RAYS ARE CAUSING THE SKIN CANCER. IT CAN REFLECT OFF THINGS LIKE SNOW. AS MUCH AS YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE YOUR CUMULATIVE ULTRAVIOLET EXPOSURE, IT HELPS PREVENT SKIN CANCER. WEARING THE SUNSCREEN ON A DAILY BASIS DOES HELP. JONATHAN: HOW DOES YOUR FOUNDATION HELP? DO YOU FUND CANCER RESEARCH? WE DO. FOR ACTUALLY, A GRASS ROOTS ORGANIZATION, WE’VE RAISED OR CONTRIBUTED OVER $125,000 DIRECTLY TOWARDS MELANOMA RESEARCH. SO WE ALSO DISTRIBUTE SUNSCREEN AT THE WESTERN SOUTHERN TENNIS TOURNAMENT. WE’VE GIVEN OUT OVER 100,000 PACKETS OVER THE YEARS. SO WE’RE REALLY TRYING TO EMPHASIZE TO PEOPLE WHEN THEY’RE IN A SETTING WHERE THERE’S A LOT OF SUN TO KEEP THE SUNSCREEN ON. TENNIS FOR SURE IS ONE OF THOSE SETTINGS. OUR SON WAS A BIG TENNIS PLAYER. THAT’S WHY. WHAT SPF IN THE PACKET? THIS IS 30. NOTHING LESS THAN 30 IS WHAT YOU WANT TO USE. ACTUALLY, DR. KIRKLAND CAN PROBABLY CONFIRM THIS, THE 50S AND THE 60S AND THE 80S, IT’S REALLY 30. I MEAN, THAT’S REALLY WHAT YOU NEED TO DO. I DON’T THINK YOU NEED TO GO TO THE EXTRA STEPS. AS LONG AS YOU GET ENOUGH SUNSCREEN ON, SPF 30 SHOULD BE JUST FINE. JONATHAN: FREQUENCY? HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU BE REAPPLYING. EVERY FEW HOURS TO MAKE SURE YOU GET ENOUGH ON. IF YOU’RE SWIMMING, TOWELLING OFF, PUT MORE SUNSCREEN ON. JONATHAN: IF YOU WANT TO HELP IN THE EFFORT, THE BLOCK THE SUN RUN/WALK WILL BE AT GLENDALE SQUARE MAY 16 AT 5:00 P.M. IF YOU’D LIKE MORE INFORMATION
