5 Benefits of Coconut Oil – Coconut Oil Uses and Health Benefits

In today’s Dry Eye Show we are going over
the 5 benefits of coconut oil I’m Dr. Travis Zigler and I’m Dr. Jenna
Zigler. In the next 5 minutes You’re going to learn the 5 benefits
of coconut oil for all parts of your body. If coconut oil is safe to use
around your eyes If coconut oil helps your eyelashes grow.
If it’s safe and okay to use it on your eyelids as well . We’ve had thousands
of patients use or start using coconut oil and we recommend organic unrefined
coconut oil but they be used it for their multiple benefits including anti
bacterial. It’s an antifungal. It’s a moisturizer. It’s a natural SPF and it
has fatty acid benefits which we talk about all the time with dry eye but
again before I forget if you’re serious about getting rid of your dry eye head

so with that being said let’s discuss the five benefits of coconut oil. Benefit number one is coconut oil for the skin. Vitamin E is what makes
coconut oil a perfect moisturizer and anti-ager. This gives you a nice glow
right when you get out of the shower The vitamin E in the coconut oil does fight
aging in the skin due to a high concentration of antioxidants and also
coconut oil has antimicrobial properties It can soothe eczema, psoriasis, staph
infections, and other skin conditions It also helps decrease inflammation due
to its high fatty acid content It is really great for your skin. Benefit
number two is eating coconut oil Coconut oil can improve your digestion
because it helps the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, calcium, and magnesium.
It helps gut health by destroying candida and bad bacteria which can
really cause inflammation and digestive issues. Coconut oil can really help
with that. It can also help you lose weight because it increases energy
expenditure by as much as 5% It doesn’t seem like a lot but it’s huge
because you can burn an extra 100 calories per day and that’s 36,000
calories per year so that’s a lot of calories. It can absolutely help you
do that like I was going to say how do you eat coconut oil?
I eat coconut oil in my coffee actually I think substitutes for a great creamer
and a sweetener because it has that slight organic coconut flavor. It has a little creamy buttery feel to it because
it has coconut oil and so we put it in there. Grind it up. Mix it. You can put in
Vitamix. The best way to do it is to put your coffee like a tablespoon or less or more whatever you want of coconut oil into a blender with
your coffee blend it up in your Vitamix and it makes it really frothy.
It’s almost like you’re having a coconut latte which is awesome. Give
it a try because coconut oil is absolutely great to eat. That’s a
great way to get it into your diet You’d be surprised like if you do
that like I drink green tea with coconut oil in it in the morning. Sometimes I
won’t eat breakfast because I’m doing a longer fast all the way up until noon. It’s kind of an insta fasting but it makes you burn
more fat in that state. You actually end up burning more calories as a result
you’re not eating any sugar Share this video if you find it helpful and leave a comment below We always give away Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser to one commenter Comment any questions that you have for
us at The Dry Eye Show. Benefit number three of coconut oil is in
your hair. Which is one of my favorites not because it makes your hair shine
more than mineral oil does but because it actually makes your hair shine more than mineral oil because it penetrates the
hair shaft. I don’t use coconut oil in my hair. I would be a greaseball. That
wouldn’t be fun. I would not because I have dry scalp and that’s another
benefit. If you have dry scalp or like dandruff what I recommend is after you dry your hair take a tablespoon rub it in between your
hands to liquefy it and then just massage it into your scalp. That is going to
help out with dry skin. You can rinse it off then if needed I don’t rinse it off
I just leave it on because it’s not that greasy. To get the benefits in the shower you can also use coconut oil as a conditioner. Set up your normal
conditioner and you just rinse it off That’s going to leave your hair a
little heavier than conditioner does It is going to be a little greasier
but actually I love it If my hair is shorter I can actually use it as my hair gel when hair gets longer I can’t use it if you have short hair use it like Dr. Travis. If you have longer hair you can use it as a conditioner in the
shower that might work for you you can use it as a moisturizer
in your hair on your scalp before bed and then shower in the morning that can
be really helpful Benefit number four is
coconut oil on your face. This sounds crazy to put an oil on your face but
make sure you’re using organic unrefined coconut oil. It contains
antimicrobial properties which work to treat skin conditions like acne and then
the antioxidants in coconut oil could help heal skin problems even scarring sometimes. What it also does for your skin is it leaves you with
a nice glow. If you come out of the shower and put coconut oil on your
face you will actually notice your skin is glowing a little bit more as a result It absorbs well. It doesn’t clog your pores as much as you think it will It sounds crazy but it
actually works really well and it’s only made of one chemical coconut oil. A quick note on coconut oil for your face Organic coconut oil, organic unrefined coconut oil is non-comedogenic You have to be careful with coconut
oil that is non-organic and non refined You do not know what you are getting It can become comedogenic and it can clog pores in some people. It can also be drying for
some people. You just have to test it on your own skin and see what works for
you. Benefit number five is cooking with coconut oil. Which we do all
the time. You want to replace your nasty cooking oils that really clog your
arteries with organic coconut oil Get rid of the corn oil, peanut oil, soy, vegetable oil, even butter definitely Crisco I think my mom still has some in her cabinet. Mom please throw it away Actually to go back on this a lot of
you guys probably use butter Butter is very common in everybody’s
household. If you use butter replace it with if you like the salty
flavor of butter which a lot of people do because it’s salted all you got to do
is add a little sea salt to your coconut oil liquefy it and spread it over
anything you want to put butter on It’s great. You can make healthy mashed potatoes instead of butter put coconut oil in there with a
little salt. It is going to be as creamy as your normal mashed potatoes without
milk or butter Coconut oil is a great source of
natural saturated fats which can increase the healthy cholesterol in
your body and help convert bad cholesterol into healthy cholesterol. This can lower your risk of heart disease help to lower your cholesterol
and coconut oil is great because it has a higher smoke point than other oils
you don’t want to heat an oil until it’s smoking. Coconut oil is
great for cooking because it can be heated to a higher temperature. Smoking
oils basically damages the oil and it’s not safe to consume after that. That’s
why coconut oil is so great and make sure that you’re always using organic
virgin coconut oil. Stressing that point A bonus benefit is coconut oil for
your eyes. As we age the skin below your eyes
become thinner and maybe darker worse due to allergies and
dehydration and lack of sleep and some different medications
to treat your under eye circles just flaky or dry eyelids in general you want to take about a teaspoon of the organic coconut
oil just massage it on the skin underneath your eyes and even on your
eyelids I’m okay with that too after you’ve removed your eye makeup cleanse
your skin and use the Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser and let it dry. Share this video if you find it helpful and comment below as we pick one commenter to win a Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser comment any dry eye
questions you have below and we’d be happy to answer them or point you to a
blog post that we’ve written or a video we’ve done to answer those is also
comment below and we may pick you to win the Heyedrate one-ounce. Let’s jump into a
few questions that we’ve had come in regarding coconut oil. First question
is coconut oil safe for your eyes? It is not going to harm your eyes if
you’re using organic unrefined or virgin coconut oil so unrefined and virgin are
pretty much the same thing what that means is it comes from
actual meat of the coconut and it’s not chemically bleached or anything like
that it actually just comes straight from the coconut. It is going to
cause some blurry vision in your eye because you are putting an oil in
your eye or even on your eyelids It is going to disrupt that tear film
because it is oil. Another side effect is it can clog your pores. We said it doesn’t really clog your pores but it can on some people just
keep that in mind because it may cause a stye. I’ve never had that problem and I’ve used it for a long time. Jude just had a stye we put coconut oil be sure to use organic
virgin coconut oil this is a broken record likely to cause problems the
honest truth is if you don’t buy organic products you don’t know what you are
getting. It’s actually kind of scary with olive oil for example. Mostly it is soybean oil unless you buy organic
and same thing like palm oil has been a hot topic because it’s been
harvested poorly and that you don’t know what you’re getting it’s not organic and
sustainable and so organic organic The second question is it okay
to use coconut oil on your eyelids? Yes organic virgin coconut oil and the side
note on this is coconut oil can actually be drying for some people so if you
notice that you’re using coconut oil and your skin starts to become a little
drier it could be the coconut oil for most people it’s not but for some it is
and so if you notice that coconut oil is drying use organic jojoba oil or you can
use our eye makeup remover our eye makeup removers organic grapeseed oil
and that’s actually very non greasy jojoba oil tends to be a little greasier
here if there’s a greasy scale jojoba oil is on top coconut oils in the
middle and then grapeseed oils kind of rightward coconut oil is maybe a little
below it so that’s why you can use either our eye makeup remover as a
moisturizer for your eyelids or you can use organic coconut oil as well
going along with that coconut oil we take with us a lot when we travel
because it hardens and it won’t get everywhere because every time I take
jojoba oil with us when we travel I end up with it all over my travel bags
at that point when you’re up in a plane that’s when it usually explodes
and coconut oil in the temperature that a plane goes up in the air and
it’s like what -60 up there it hardens and won’t burst all over but the reason we take that coconut
oil with us when we travel and we use it as our moisturizer but I do find that my
skin reacts differently and probably worse than when I use jojoba oil at home
you do have to just know what’s best for you basically. Another question
can coconut oil make your eyelashes grow? Eyelashes often break off because
they’d become brittle because of blepharitis and even demodex mites and can cause your eyelashes to break off and
turn in different directions and it can do weird things but a great solution for
the brittleness is moisturization and that is what organic coconut oil can
help you with. You can also use organic jojoba oil or also our organic
eye makeup remover but you want to use the oil on your lashes at least once per
day. What I do is I wash my face. I use our spray. I let it dry completely and
then I moisturize my face and my eyelids with coconut oil or jojoba oil or
whatever you’d like We recommend coconut oil. Eat it. Moisturize with it Put it in your hair. Use it on your
eyelids. Use it for whatever you want for the most part. It’s a healthy oil. It’s
great for you. Make sure it’s organic virgin or unrefined coconut oil. I
challenge you to replace your lotion with coconut oil. It’s not that bad. It’s
actually not that greasy after about five minutes or so coconut oil isn’t it
but jojoba oil can be greasy there is a link in the
description to read more about this and don’t forget to like this video
subscribe to our channel share this with someone who you think might benefit from
the video and don’t forget to visit dryeyecommunity.com to get your free dry
eye Ebook and thank you so much Let’s jump into some live questions Peggy says my eye doctor suggested fish oil 2x a day. Do
you agree? Yes so what we actually do and we start patients on fish oil we use our
Heyedrate omega-3 and our Heyedrate omega-3 just has under 1000 milligrams per
day of dose which is 3 fish oils a day We actually start our patient on
double that dose and so we’ll start them with 3 in the morning and then 3 at night and so they double the dose for about
the first month or two that’s called a loading dose that gets the fish oil
built up in our system gets bad omega-6s and bad omega-3s out builds up the
good omega-3s and helps with that cholesterol helps with everything else
that fish oil is good for Yes I recommend it 2x a day at the
beginning. It’s called a loading dose like I said before and if you haven’t
tried our Heyedrate omega-3 make sure you head over there and try that. I can post
it as a reply to your comment Lisa asks is there a huge difference between coconut oil and coconut butter Yes there is a difference. They are both going to be healthy to use. If you have a
preference for sure use an organic version and use whatever your preference
is but coconut oil is just more generally use and can be used for
everything whereas coconut butter you can’t really spread that on your skin very easily coconut butter you’re more going to use in cooking and baking coconut butter has more in it correct? I don’t know if it has more in it. It is just
different part of the coconut basically but coconut oil is also much
easier to find in my opinion If I go to Whole Foods I can of course find
coconut butter but if I go to any grocery store I can find coconut oils. Diane asks does all coconut oil have vitamin E? Coconut oil has
natural antioxidants and vitamin E being one of those antioxidants and it has fatty acids You may not see it listed on the label
but those are in the coconut oil They are in the meat. When you press
out oil it’s going to transfer with the oil and so it’s just going to be built in
to help you with your skin and everything and it’s organic and it’s
natural. Jean says thank you for recommending coconut oil. I found many
amazing benefits of it so far. I use it on my face including under my eyes and
on my eyelids. I have healed a split lip very quickly with it. I’ve used it all over my
body. It is the best and least expensive moisturizer I’ve ever used. Agree and yes you can use it as a lip moisturizer as well Ursula says thank you for the coffee tip one tablespoon of coconut oil in coffee. That’s a lot actually. If you want to do less. I do a tablespoon when I’m
fasting that morning so tablespoon of coconut oil in the coffee you can blend
it in a blender that makes it frothy or you can just mix it with a spoon like I
do and then just drink it. It is not going to be as frothy. Anna says she liked
and shared. I really could use this If you’re wondering what
kind of coconut oil to use which Kathy asks right there and the next question as well goes along with that. We will
talk about it separately but organic unrefined or virgin coconut oil the one
we recommend is in the link in the description there’s a blog post for this
you can click and go over everything we just went over and that actually has the
recommended coconut oil that we use it’ll take you over to
Amazon to purchase that Barbara asked do you recommend MCT oil
or brain octane oil instead of coconut oil? It’s absolutely a great option for you if you want to use it in
your coffee then absolutely you can use that that’s perfectly fine some people
find heightened benefits as far as concentration and things like that if
you use MCT oil or brain octane oil but if you want to use those that’s
perfectly fine and MCT oil is just medium chain triglyceride is pretty much
the one of the chains of the fatty acids of coconut oil broken down and singled
out and so the reason being is that you don’t get everything else that you get
with coconut oil and with just MCT oil it’s supposed to cause a more enhanced
focus effect and so a lot of its big in the entrepreneur community to have MCT
oil in your coffee because it makes you focus more and so it does work it works
really well but I use coconut oil because I like to have less
processed foods and I still get that MCT oil in the coconut oil and all the other
benefits as well. Bonnie says Hi guys I cook with coconut oil like saute my
asparagus, finish cook eggs with it. That counts right? Otherwise how much is good
to actually consume? I have a hard time just eating it off the spoon? Yes that
counts of course. How much for you to consume really depends on your diet. Some people do Keto and they have a a huge fat allowance in their diet. Other people aren’t. They have less of a
fat allowance in their diet. It’s just however much you want to eat.
You probably eat a tablespoon or two throughout the day. If you’re
cooking with it all the time and that’s great. That’s perfectly fine. You don’t
have to eat it with a spoon but you can blend it in your coffee and it’s really
good. We’re going back to the heating it part. A lot of people they will heat
their skillet and then throw a cold oil into the skillet and then it kind of
boils and then smokes and that is exactly what you do not want because smoking oil is a damaged oil and therefore if you have a damaged oil
it’s going to cause damage in your body even if you’re cooking with coconut
oil bring up the heat slowly and then I usually put mine some type
about a medium to a medium low and then I let it sit for about probably
five minutes or so until the pan gets a chance to heat up and then I
usually cook on it so that keeps it from smoking and like I said smoking oil is damaged oil damaged oil caused damages in your body
so make sure you’re not smoking it Cheryl says hello and great info.Tami says please tell us of the brand of coconut oil for
face and lashes so organic refined or virgin coconut oil we did recommend one
it’s in the link in the description and you can click that link it takes you
over to our blog and it’s on there check that out. Ursula says I have a
scar on my chest should I try it on that? Absolutely you should. A scar is very hard to heal. We actually
recommend using our spray first Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser. The
hypochlorous acid rubbing that in letting it dry for about a minute
and then putting coconut oil in it you’re going to get a lot more antioxidants
and you’re also going to get the hypochlorous acid helping out with that
as well because it does help out with scars. Cathy ask how do you put it in your coffee? put some coffee depending how much you’re going to drink in your blender and then add a tablespoon
some people would even do more but I would say up to a tablespoon of coconut
oil and blend and that is it easy to do or you can just drop it in
there and stir that’s what I do in the description there’s a link
to a blog post that has the recommended coconut oil that we use and
it does actually preferably on Amazon it actually takes you over to
Amazon to purchase Fernanda says Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser after or before coconut oil? It’s a great question
so my nightly routine is I take off my eye makeup with our eye makeup remover take off your makeup first and use our
eye makeup remover for that and then you wash your face with our tea tree oil soap
and then after you do that you dry spray the Heyedrate and then you moisturize with coconut oil but wait until the Heyedrate dries and then instead of
coconut oil you can use our eye makeup remover as a moisturizer and that has
tea tree oil, grapeseed oil, and jojoba oil and vitamin E as well. It gives
either one. Again in the link in the description there is the brand of
coconut oil click that link it goes to the blog and that will help. Can it help
with eyelash loss? Tammy ask coconut oil or really any oil that
you’re using to moisturize your eyelashes and eyelids is going to be great
for eyelash loss because the reason that you lose eyelashes is
because they break off and blepharitis can do that MGD, demodex, rosacea all
those things can contribute to eyelash loss and so what you’re trying to do is
moisturize them so that they stay where they are instead of breaking off
so easily and moisturization with coconut oil can definitely do that. If you’re just joining us make sure you share this video. If you found
it helpful also make sure you like it or love it or laugh at it I don’t care what
you do just comment somehow and then comment below if you have any questions
for us about coconut oil. There’s a link in the description that will take you
over to the blog post everything we went over it will also have the replay for
this video as well and then we pick one commenter to win Heyedrate Lid and Lash
Cleanser one ounce and we send it to you also going back to helping with
eyelash loss eyelashes are lost because the eyelid margin is disrupted so
coconut oil will help but you also have to tame the blepharitis and demodex
first. The reason we’ve been saying organic unrefined or virgin
coconut oil is because there’s a lot of terminology out there
key word number one organic obviously what it sounds like it’s
organic. Most organic coconut oil is going to be fine. Basically unrefined
just means that it hasn’t been bleached with chemicals to reduce the flavor of
coconut oil and the smell refined means just think it’s
been through a refinery. It’s been bleached. It’s been kind of nutrient
stripped and everything think of refined grains are like white bread so an unrefined cold-pressed is good as well that’s just how they
press the oil out and some people don’t like the taste of coconut oil in all of
their cooking so if that’s the case for you if you can find an organic refined
coconut oil and that’s fine to use in cooking it won’t taste like coconut
whereas the unrefined will taste like coconut but unrefined is better just because it’s less processed. It’s kind of
like coffee decaf coffee has to be done Anna ask I’ve been hearing more and more about using high-quality castor oil
as eyedrops. What do you think of that? I don’t think of it because it should not
be done because you don’t know where the castor oil is coming from unless you’re
getting it from a reputable eyedrop manufacturer and then I don’t
reduce in a sterile environment I don’t know a reputable eyedrop manufacturer that is using castor oil. Use castor oil on your
eyelashes and on your eyelids and on your skin if you want to just
like you do coconut oil but don’t put it in your eye. It’s just too unregulated in America maybe in your country it might
not be but in the United States it is not regulated enough that I would ever
trust putting castor oil even if it’s organic high-quality castor oil in your
eyes because it’s not sterile and they don’t come in single-use packs and
there’s probably no preservatives in your high-quality organic castor oil and
so you got to be very careful about that That goes with anything that you put
in your eye It’s in the link in the description but I can post it after we’re done here. Jean ask when you say your makeup eye remover can be used as a moisturizer can it be used only as a
moisturizer for eyelashes and kids? I’m guessing lids but maybe kids for
kids. It’s good for kids. It’s good for lids. It’s good for lashes. It’s good for
everywhere. I actually use it I started using it because we
went on a trip and we forgot the coconut oil but we had her eye makeup
remover half of it left the bottle and exploded everywhere but I started using it as moisturizer This is great. It’s not that greasy
and it has tea tree oil built into it and I used it on my eyelids and on my
eyelashes. I don’t specifically comb my eyelashes but
I just put it on my eyelids and rubbed it all over my face and it worked great. Now I use it everyday I was using coconut oil. Now I use our eye
makeup remover and there is tea tree oil in it that can be drying for some people but so can coconut oil so you just have to try it out for
yourself and see what works for you I do like to leave some on my
eyelids at night after I take off my makeup. Karen ask coconut butter yum. I use it in sweet potato soup soup with oregano. That sounds amazing
you can come and make some for us Sarah ask are you familiar with meibography? Did you use it when you were practicing?
It wasn’t out when we were practicing the first time and then we were under our practice we didn’t get one We got a couple other pieces of
equipment before we had that and so we the second time around when we had our own practice we were more of a glaucoma practice and
that was just because of where it was it was just surrounded by tons of glaucoma
but we are very familiar with it it’s great technology to map the meibomian glands Aubie are you guys vegan and does it help
with dry eye disease? We are not vegan but we’re vegetarian or dairy-free we’re
gluten free and not about 90% of the time and then we don’t eat meat that
often the only meat we eat are eggs occasionally our son eats them every day
but I don’t eat them that much and Jenna eats them probably every week or so
but we’re very flexitarian I’d say 90 and 95 percent the thing about
going vegan and does it help dry eye disease it absolutely can for some people course everybody is different
you do have to make sure that you’re keeping your fat intake up because
healthy fats are really going to help with dry eye disease more than anything
healthy fats and just alkaline antioxidant rich diet and we will post a reply to yours going to our green smoothie chart and
that should help out What is your view on MSN drops for
your eyes? Just make sure you buy them from a reputable dealer. There’s
studies that support that it does help with a lot of things and it’s more of a
natural eye drop and if you find something that works and it works for
you then use it but just know that most drops in general if you do start to
use them they’re not an overnight success they’re not made to just
lubricate your eye and so you have to use them at least for two to three to
four weeks including our eyelid cleanser including our Heyedrate lid and lash
cleanser including our tea tree soap everything we sell it’s not going to
cause overnight success and so anything you try just make sure you try it for at
least two to four weeks to see if it’s going to work for you and so artificial
tears more just cover a symptom whereas in MSM drops may help get to the the source of the problem but they’re not as strong as
prescription drops but they are more natural so I do like that factor. Cathy
says thank you Thanks so much for all your advice. You
are welcome. Thanks so much great information. Thank you both very much Courtney asks does coconut oil
help with fine lines around the eyes? I’ve used it before but didn’t find it
to be hydrating enough maybe I’m not using the right kind or should I add
another oil to it? It can help with fine lines but I think
that really good moisturization in general can do that so if the coconut
oil isn’t as moisturizing as you would like and I would try a different oil
such as jojoba oil or something like that because coconut oil isn’t
going to be moisturizing enough for everyone so maybe try jojoba oil or you can try our eye makeup remover as a moisturizer because
we’ve mixed it all for you already It’s not as greasy. It’s very moisturizing so that’s going lead to this next one what do you think
about putting tea tree oil essential oil and coconut butter for moisturizing know
what you’re doing be very careful because you have to dilute tea tree oil
enough so it doesn’t burn and let us do it for you in our manufacturing
facilities because we know exactly how much to put in every single time and we
make sure we don’t put enough in to burn your eyes and your skin because
tea tree oil will burn your skin and it will burn your eyes unless it’s diluted
enough and it’s diluted properly tea tree oil is also very poisonous to
you so make sure you do not eat it and so use our eye makeup remover if you’re
interested in the tea tree oil moisturizer and let us do the mixing for
you I don’t say that to sell more of our product I say that to protect you
because tea tree oil is dangerous it is poisonous to humans but it works very well so that’s why we use it a lot of things are poisonous to us like every medication on the market Chemotherapy is poisoning your
body to kill cancer but it also kills your own cells as well. Everyone talks about omega-3 is there one that helps the best? Yes ours
I mean if you have one that is working key things to make sure that you
remember is sustainably sourced triglyceride formula, and easy to swallow.
Those are the things you want to make sure that you’re following with omega-3s. Ours is all three of those because that’s what we believe ours is
sustainably source off the coast of Iceland in an area that you have to be
licensed and you can only fish a certain amount per year. It’s triglyceride
base because ester base is more processed and then it’s easy to swallow
we actually made it smaller it’s about 50 percent smaller than most fish oils
out there. Is there one better than the other all the ones that are
formulated for dry eye are all great and so they’re all going to work really well
I have my opinion on some that are better than others like ours and
those are the only two I recommend ours and HydroEyes HydroEyes I recommend actually taking
with ours because it attacks different omegas than ours does. It
attacks GLA where ours is more EPA and DHA. Those are just three different
fatty acids that you can take to help out with your dry eye so HydroEyes and
Heyedrate omega-3 those are the two I recommend. Is Vaseline good to remove eye makeup? If you like putting oil on your not good oil but like petroleum oil on
your eyelid Don’t use Vaseline. I wouldn’t. I would
use any other oil. You can use our eye makeup remover. Which is mostly grapeseed oil jojoba oil or coconut oil. Use any of those. Do you sell your stuff as a kit or individual? Yes to both. We sell individually We sell out as a kit. I can put some
links to our beauty bundle and then I can put some links to the individuals as
a reply to your comment after the show That looks like all the
questions. That’s great. We wanted to thank you again. Visit the link in the
